Basecamp Review

Basecamp
Our score: 8.5 User satisfaction: 100%

What is Basecamp?

Basecamp is one of the most popular online project management suites today and branded as a reliable service that offers simple setup and short learning time. The first place in this category, however, is held by monday.com which has a total score of 9.8/10 and is the winner of our Best Project Management Software Award for 2019. You can try out monday.com for free here. You can also compare Basecamp with monday.com and see which one is better for your company.

In our Basecamp review we found out that setting up an account and jumping right into project management is quite easy with this software, enabling users to organize people, delegate tasks, and monitor progress right from the get go. Now, serving more than millions of users and still being a popular pick for over 10 years, Basecamp clearly is a top choice when it comes to online project management. What makes it even better is the flexible pricing scheme, where no company will be charged per user, and all clients will have access to the same features, depending on the purpose for which they’re using this system. Enterprise-grade users are encouraged to contact the company and ask for an individual quote, and cover usage per year instead of paying monthly installments.

After a summary of several Basecamp reviews our expert team also recommended this solution as one of the best integrated project management systems, which you can automatically connect to Headquarters, Everest, FreeAgent, Feed, Dashable, Numerics, enRoute, Daypack, Cyfe, Zapier, DashStack, and many more business apps. Signing up and trying the features of this system for 60 days is very simple, as you can even use your Google Account to get started.

Overview of Basecamp Benefits

Basecamp covers a lot of bases when it comes to managing projects and personnel, even if members of your team are time zones apart from each other. What is really important to know about the system is that you will be dealing with a reliable company that has been leading the project management industry for years, and has 17 years of development experience, investing repeatedly in simplifying innovations that work perfectly even for the most complex and cumbersome projects. In fact, Basecamp was the first company to introduce remote project management, and has never stopped improving this concept to the benefit of its users. Here are some of the main benefits Basecamp presents to businesses all over the world:

Basecamp comes with a myriad of features and tools that allow companies to efficiently monitor their projects and get things done on time and on budget. The most important functionalities are mixed in an intuitive and user-friendly program which you can run in minutes. Unlike most project managers, Basecamp is hosted in cloud and provided as a service, and will never require you to take care of maintenance and updates. As long as you’re paying your monthly fee, the system has all IT expertise related matters covered for you.

The company will make sure you have access to 24/7 technical assistance while making you way through the program, and will make you a member of a large users community with a live Q&A base, where you can have all questions answered in only few minutes.

But what is it that differs Basecamp from similar project managers? First of all, it is an innovative solution. All tasks are organized in to-do lists, with due ranges and dates, and assigned employees to avoid all sorts of confusion. The most impressive part is how you get to prioritize and reorder tasks, and tailor the system to work  up to your needs. At the end of every operation, Basecamp summarizes accomplishments, and lets you generate automated reports and save even more time.

Basecamp is also a great system for sharing ideas, proposals, or organize reference conversations, and make sure all team members are on the same page. What is more, the innovative campfires allow you to use pings and chat with individuals and groups in real time, and reach fast consensus for every important decision.

At the same time, you get to use Basecamp as your documents and files manager, where you can store, link, tag, share, or comment on your corporate information using a simple drag-and-drop mechanism. Notifications, searching filters, latest activity feeds, and automated check-ins will also be available.

PROS: I love how I can easily set up project milestones and to-do lists. I can also task a specific to-do list to a particular person. This gets rid of the duplication of efforts by other team members. Basecamp also allows us to created projects where our clients can also collaborate and provide their input. Project management becomes easy too as I can share and messages to specific people and not worry about sharing too much.

CONS: I wish Basecamp allow members to comment on a thread. I don't like that they can't join the discussion unless the administrator adds them. I also don't like that new hires can't view the project that pre-date themm.

PROS: Basecamp delivers great service and awesome customer support. They roll out a consistent string of updates and the user interface is very smart. In fact, it is so intuitive enough that even my most technology apprehensive clients hare having a blast using the system.

CONS: Rather keeping a single development trunk, Basecamp has a number of issues in relation to releasing major updates as totally new, yet mutually exclusive, platforms. This results to migrating projects becoming a nightmare as every new major release is priced using an entirely new pricing structure. Those new pricing structures seem to only benefit the heavy users; meaning, if you require less than a few dozen projects, you paying more for the only little things you need.

PROS: Our conversations are stored in one location. Though we still use emails, wikis, agendas, and Google Docs, Basecamp still has the best features, namely notification of follow ups and reminders. We are all Indonesians so we don't use English often yet Basecamp enables us to work efficiently with minimal use for English because its instructions and guides are all easy to understand.

CONS: I do not think it's any fault of the system. Our people tend to forget ticking their to-do lists once they are done.

PROS: It is perfect tool for teams which are working remotely. A team member can assign a task to another member on the same platform without having to meet or call them. This is because a notification is send to the person assigned automatically where they take on the task. There is also a to-do list for team members such that they know what they are supposed to do within the project. With this feature, it is possible to check the progress of each task and communicate effectively among team members on that progress. Everything is seamless when it comes to this tool and all members can be on the same page to see to it that the project succeeds.

CONS: Although communication is key when managing a project, it is vital that you find a way to make that easy. With Basecamp, it can be confusing where you have multiple to-do lists to deal. I would wish if they made it easy to reduce the to-do lists for different tasks and team members. When such lists exist with different timelines, you can have a wave of confusion when locating and tracking who is supposed to do what. It would be nice if such to-do lists were merged or kept under one huge list especially for those tasks that are similar. This would ease the effort of having to track each list on the platform.

PROS: Basecamp is a useful tool that gives me the ability to be in charge of projects without being buried by docs, reports, and e-mail. It has an intuitive UI that aids in new project creation, member project assignment, and recent activity follow-ups. I'm even given the chance to include people outside my team (with restricted access) although details of the project are separated.

CONS: The downside with Basecamp is that it can still be a challenging aspect when following up on projects without internet connectivity. These days, such moments are a rare occurrence. In my opinion, having an off-line modus would greatly benefit the management of each project on-the-go.

PROS: Everything is seamless when it comes to Basecamp. You do not have to turn to a different platform or avenue when you want to send a message to your team. You can do it on the same platform which makes communication easier. Apart from that, you will also be able to reach out to your clients and share with them the status or progress of the project you are undertaking for them. With Basecamp, your team members will be able to work on a project together while they stay on the common objective without anyone deviating from the goal. It helps to send video files to client and share with them the files you want them to see. On top of that, you can hide some of the files or things you do not want them to see and thus the control advantage.

CONS: There are few things that I did not like about this tool. Although reliable, when it comes to the text documents, you are required to do a lot of formatting. This can be time consuming and tiring at some point. Also, the calendar feature is too basic and we were looking for something which is complex for our production. As a result, we no longer use Basecamp for our calendar needs. It would be better if the developers could improve the design of that feature so that we can utilize all the features Basecamp has to offer. Also, we love to archive files but with this tool those files, which are in the archive are accounted for when it comes to your file limit.

PROS: Basecamp is a platfrom that does its job well in managing varying project cases. In today's era of startups, you tend to tend to run into a wall when there aren't processes present in organizing work that requires completion. Bascamp's very own to-do list and assignment abilities easily keeps everything in order in even the most cluttered space scenarios.

CONS: Since you're only limited to assigning tasks one individual at a time, it can pose a challenge managing a project that requires a number of people to work on a single task at the same time.

PROS: I like how it can easily be set up, jump start a project, and abilty to include people in viewing certain projects. I also love how you can easily put up templates so you won't need to key in the same details every single time.

CONS: I was hoping there would be an easier approach in adding people to certain projects since the company I'm currently with recently hired a group of people. Whenever that happens, I always end up dealing with a project template and creating a new discussion which includes the new hires so they can be updated from a specific discussion --- which is a big pain. By simply adding individuals to gain project access, makes thngs a lot easier.

PROS: One of the biggest functionality seen with Basecamp is its capability to share varying projects to different kinds of people. Not everyone has to receive notificaitons on all changes being made in a project, so having the ability to control that with Basecamp is a plus. Its To-Do list organizes everything together and keeps things in check. Discussions allow us to constantly collaborate. This is what our marketing team really need.

CONS: It'd be nice to have some sort of ability to include the "@" in comments to get the attention of certain people to look into something. That seems to be the only downer with this platform. Other than that, it has everything else I need!

PROS: It has been able to automate many tasks which we thought could not be done. There is a good feel when you realize that you can easily communicate with teams regardless of where they are on the same platform. Basecamp equips all teams to be on the same page even if they are working remotely on multiple projects. It is never the same when it comes to this tool. Our marketing team is able to connect different projects and check on their progress without much hustle. It helps to improve the visibility of all the projects where you can check the status of each project with ease.

CONS: Although it addresses communication and collaboration within a project in a great way, it can sometimes be too much to handle. Communications within Basecamp are ever flowing where teams join in the conversations whether to ask a question or talk about the progress of the projects they are undertaking together. Whichever the case, such communications can be too many in a way that when you ask a question or a clarification from a team member, it might be difficult to trace that response. The reporting feature could be made more intuitive and reliable in such a way that recent messages are easy to find when you receive them.

Basecamp is simple and focuses on simplicity and collaboration. It is ease to add content via a desktop browser, a mobile web page, or via email. Simplicity is Basecamp's main asset. Even a novice user can become well versed with the platform in just in 15 minutes.

CONS: I do have some issues with authentication system, which can be a pain at times. I've had multiple accounts before and Basecamp can be so aggressive in remembering which account I was using.

PROS: It is reliable for teams working in multiple projects and thus the need to communicate more often. With this tool, it helps the teams to communicate and share files and documents that are essential for the success of that project. With different departments working in different projects, this product will come in handy. There is a to-do list feature that assigns or reminds everyone what they are supposed to do. On the same platform, you will know who you are depending on to get the task complete. For example, if you are working on a project, there are those activities or tasks, which are dependent on others. In short one activity or task has to be complete for another one to start. Basecamp offers that visibility for all team members, all in a single location.

CONS: There is a learning curve. I did not expect tis from a simple tool such as basecamp. The emailing feature works fine but it can take a lot of time to find your way around in terms of how it works. It was difficult, at first, to know how to use this email to assign tasks to your team members. Also, the implantation process was a bit difficult on my part. It was challenging to implement the tool into our company. All in all, the features look great and the tool is amazing once you hack all the difficult parts.

PROS: It focuses on taking care of who takes what task. When dealing with a project, you have to be a team which means each of the members will have their duties to see the project a success. Basecamp has reminders such that when you are assigned a task, it sends emails automatically to you in the form of notifications. For the purpose of security, you can hide some items on the system or make them readable to clients. This makes things easy for you as a project manager. The to-do list functionality works fine to make sure that everything is running smoothly. Everyone will have their to-do list which makes sure that everything runs as planned.

CONS: Basecamp has become a reliable tool in our workplace. We have not used any other tool since I started working there due to the efficiency it brings in terms of working for our agency. The return on investment for the same is top notch and we are happy to be part of this. However, I can point out a thing about the layout of the tool. It is not that sophisticated which may not be a problem. The color schemes are too basic, which might be good or a beginner but I would really love to see an attractive layout for the better part of it. All in all, I cannot complain about how the tool functions as there is nothing to dislike about that.

PROS: Basecamp is a major platform the task management landscape. The software does an awesome job of delegating and monitoring tasks in a specific project along with providing task management. Their response channels are also flexible: website, mobile app or through email replies. Basecamp comes with a simple website interface, which makes it easy for us to work and interact with.

CONS: There are gaping flaws in how they constructed Basecamp. For one, we can't associate a task with the amount of time it takes. Two, the system does not provide a Gannt or task planning chart. Three, Basecamp doesn't have a time monitoring tool for billing purposes.

PROS: Basecamp is very intelligent, user-friendly, and isn't cluttered, which makes its interface very attractive. The learning curve is not that steep. We use it for managing a team of network engineers that are on the field deploying network infrastructure. Basecamp simply makes it easy for me to keep tabs on everyone and get in touch with my people without any difficulty. In fact, I can assign certain management people to keep eyes on things with permissions, enabling me to set limits on what they can view and do.

CONS: I don't think there is any flaw in the system. As far as I am concerned, it does what it promises and I am at home with the software.

PROS: My team is composed of 10 members. We've been using Basecamp for awhile now to deal with existing and prospect clients. We communicate, work together, and achieve great things when utilizing it.

CONS: I'm the type who constantly uses to-do's and it tends to get clunky when it comes to editing due dates. You'll need to click it, head over to the "due date" section instead of clicking/dragging it directly to make changes. It was never made to be that to-do program. But I was hoping they could come up with something better.

PROS: It defines simplicity in a big way. To use the tool, it is easy even for a beginner as the features are simple. The layout is basic, which makes it reliable as you do not need a lot of time to train on how to find your way around. Everything works fine to our advantage. It is a great project management tool and since it is web based, you can access it from anywhere provided you are connected to the internet. The design is seamless and has a friendly user interface to top it all. As a Basecamp user, we use it for our events and projects and we cannot ask for more than this.

CONS: There are definitely some areas that would require addressing when it comes to this tool. Some of the features are too basic which should not be the case. For example, the calendar functionality is not as complex as it should. This makes it unreliable for some of the tracking activities you would want it to handle. Also, the messaging or email feature is not intuitive which makes it difficult to hack especially if you are beginner. The file feature is also a key issue to look into by the developers of Basecamp. It does not offer the user experience you would expect it to.

PROS: We're constantly using Basecamp to cater to our clients. They rarely experienced any isuses utilizing it as a communication platform. It speaks volumes to its design since both novice and experienced users can use it effectively for managing projects.

CONS: The frustration we're experiencing at present is a very good problem. We wanted to make full use of Basecamp 3. But thing is, there's no other way to bring projects over from Basecamp 2 to Basecamp 3. Essentially, we're left in the dirt with Basecamp 2 while Basecamp 3 is sticking its tongue out to us with really useful features that we badly want on Basecamp 2.

PROS: It has an all-round ability to make your projects and work in general easy. With the message board, you are home and dry as you know exactly what is going on with your projects. It helps teams to work together in unison on the same platform. Apart from that, they get to share files relevant to that project. The to-do list feature is impressive when you want to assign task to another member of the team. Using this feature, you will also include dates from the calendar to help them prioritize accordingly. There is also a document which is editable when you want to hold meetings. In the document you can indicate things that you need to talk about during the meeting which facilitates taking down of minutes in the meeting. It integrates well with email to help you stay up to date with what is happening with the projects.

CONS: The to-do list feature is limited in a way. It assumes that a single task should be undertaken by a single team member. This is not the case for big projects where tasks are huge and thus multiple members have to come in to help beat the deadline for that particular task. With Basecamp you can only assign a task for a single user. It would be better if there was an option to assign a single task to multiple persons. This would help with the big projects. Apart from the above, I am impressed with how the tool makes my work easy. Teams can work remotely and still have an update of what is happening in terms of the progress without going to the site.

PROS: I love how I'm capable of effectively managing my project communication with my team and client in a single, convenient space. I like how it stores the history of exchange files. I can also divided projects and communications if I want to.

CONS: Its WSYIWYG could use some significant improvements since it won't let me to format my texts. Its time tracker and task tracker appears to be under-developed. It needs to find ways to effectively manage the timeline and gantt. In the end, I personally think Basecamp is really just a communication tool-wannabe with several functionality missing. But I do find it to be a handy tool to communicate with members and team.

PROS: Basecamp's strongest feature is its capability to let users easily share projects with specific individuals. The system makes it simple for management to control what can be shared by who and to whom. There is also the to-do list features that makes collaoration, discussions, and organization simple and more efficient than ever.

CONS: I wish I could easily tag people using the "@". That would really draw their attention and make communication more simplified.

PROS: Basecamp is a user-friendly tool that is streamlined and perfect for coordinating complicated activities among a diverse group of professonals. Initially I used it for my startup. Now, I am using it for projects with my church and community. It comes with a just the right dose of well-designed features that simplifies everything that is project management. The system also integrates with email and other services that I use. Their "no orphan" policy, where existing versions are still supported indefinitelym is also a huge benefit.

CONS: Each project is an entirely different animal, which can be challenging to scale to overlapping teams working on simultaneous projects. Basecamp 2's pricing was a bit hard to comprehend, which seems to have been corrected with the arrival of Basecamp 3.

PROS: Our team finds Basecamp as the friendliest project management software we've encountered and this is a big deal. That is because many of our staff our non-technical users who are not as quick and adaptive in learning complex business systems. Basecamp solves that easily for us with awesome social features like Campfire and 'Hey!' notifications yet also comes with powerful project management tools such as to-do lists and schedulers.

CONS: They could have made the in-app text editor to be more feature-rich. In-app text editing would have been useful in working with live documents. It also lacks a number of tools like adding tables.

PROS: Before Basecamp, life was simply intolerable. I seriously had no idea how to properly organize my business. But this time around, we're able to build our business via Basecamp. It did very well in saving me a lot of hours, decreasing business-related stress, and pushing me to run my company efficiently.

CONS: There have been some features seen in Basecamp 2 that were sluggish in adding to Basecamp 3 (those that couldn't be included). As of this time, I'm seeing images that won't show up in a certain task whenever I copy and paste a URL of an image file. The tool's "clientside" project isn't reall recommended since we wounded up going to back to the old system we were accustomed in building divided Basecamp projects for each client to see through and cross items in their to-do list.

PROS: I simply love how Basecamp would simply come in and resolve unlimited e-mail threads where information can easily get lost in the process. I currently make use of it to handle a team of freelancers for different design projects. You can easily retain projects in a single thread, do image and document uploads, and expedite execution and approval processes.

CONS: There's reall nothing much to hate with this tool. Having the capacity to include deadlines per task is awesome. Maybe they should give users a chance to add time deadlines or maybe assigning them to multiple users? Right now, it's something that doesn't really hinder me from anything.

PROS: I love how I get to see the progress of any project and conveniently laid out for you in a single screen along with the timeline. I like how it would show individuals doing certain tasks and when they were able to get to them. This shows how much eacn member within the team has contributed for each project(s).

CONS: I've recently been at it with Basecamp 3 for the past few days. However, I didn't appreciate how you can't delegate tasks to individuals in one to-do list on Basecamp 2. I didn't like the calendar layout seen in Basecamp 3. I prefer the grid-backed calendar system as opposed to the drop-down list.

PROS: It helps us to be organized when it comes to managing big projects. It does no matter how many team members we have, Basecamp helps us to come through for our clients. With everything in a single platform, steam members can be in different location and still communicate effectively when undertaking a project. It has great features to make this possible. For example, you can prioritize a task and share files with other team members without much hustle. The user interface is simple, which allows everyone to get onboard without major problems. In short, it is much easier to manage projects regardless of the size with Basecamp.

CONS: It is the best tool we have in which offers similar functionalities. Our project management problems have been resolved thanks to this tool. However, even with all that it has to offer, there are few things that need improving to make our work easier. The fact that the message board is too basic makes it less reliable to use for managing projects and tasks. It could be made better in terms of the layout. For example, it would be nice if the recent notifications or messages would appear at the top so that you can spot them with ease. For the current layout, the old messages appear at the top while the new ones are located at the bottom.

PROS: Basecamp helps in organizing project discussions and more importantly, it contains all of those discussions within the system and away from my email inbox. I have it set up to notify me via email when there's been a new message. Still, I can erase the email since the message is saved within the discussion thread in Basecamp. When I go to the project details in to a project, I need not go deep as Basecamp provides me all the info I require. No more digging through tons of emails to retrieve the most current feedback and trends.

CONS: Basecamp is perfect. There is nothing I don't like about it.

The system features a very intuitive interface that enables me to create new projects, delegate tasks to members, and follow up on activities without any hitch or hiccup. I can even pull in externel parties to the projects and set limited access so they can provide their input and expertise.

CONS: I just can't work with Basecamp when I am offline. Without internet, Basecamp is pretty much useless. I wish they would come up with a way to make Basecamp accessible even when offline.

PROS: One of the best things I love about Basecamp is its ability to get project teams up to speed whenever there are changes or additions made with project items. I'v been a user for more than 5 years and have seen tremendous improvements made over the years. They're not the type who just sits there and promote their product.

CONS: The thing that I don't like with Basecamp (this may have something to do with the configurations made with the projetcs when taking over previously used projects) is how they appear linear when displaying its latest updates.

PROS: We have made it a home at Basecamp. All our projects have become better organized and our team members and clients cannot be happier than this. The project team members are able to work effectively and collaborate at a professional level on a project with ease. This means a higher success rate which is attributed by the functionalities Basecamp brings. All the details about a project are kept in the project folder for the team members to see and also clients to review. This makes our work easier as we do not have to look for documents of a particular project since it is easy to locate them.

CONS: It has almost everything to offer for a modern project management tool. We were happy when using this tool for our projects. However, there were some glitches and hitches when it came to evaluating the creative deliverables by our team. There was no way to evaluate how clients rated our work. On the same note, you could invite a client to take part in the conversations and hide some of the things from them. This functionality could have corrected that defect as clients would give their views about the project up to where it is. Also, for the case of tagging files and documents, it could have been improved. This also goes for time keeping for the projects.

PROS: Basecamp excels with its core feature: to-do lists. The functionality helps us to quickly and easily plan out a project from start to finish. This is undeniably its best feature. The templating tool also eases the process of setting up new projects and being able to configure those templates to cater various projects needs is indeed helpful. It is also easy to assign dates and users with their tasks, which I believe should be an absolute necessity. Great improvements on the dashboard, which now allows users to see an overview of projects, lists and to-dos. Get Basecamp if you can afford it. There are less expensive and even free options for project management but Basecamp is the most streamlined and useful project management platform that I've used.

CONS: It doesn't have its own time-tracking functionality. This lack of a basic feature keeps me from giving it a top score.
