What is AppCode?

AppCode is an innovative integrated development environment (IDE) designed by JetBrains for MacOS/IOS development. It’s an intelligent IDE that enables developers to code faster and build apps for Apple devices including Macs, iPads, and iPhones. The software analyzes your code structure and handles the routine tasks efficiently to save you from tedious typing.

AppCode is a cross-platform application that supports all code editing and modification functions including analysis, syntax highlighting, completion, refactoring, and navigation. The application consolidates many languages in a unified IDE with native support for Swift, Objective-C, C++, C, XML, CSS, HTML, JavaScript, and Xpath. AppCode is fully compatible with Xcode, without the need for additional configuration. It also exhibits seamless integration with Git, CocoaPods, Perforce, Jira, Reveal, and Subversion.

Overview of AppCode Benefits

AppCode is a smart IDE built to facilitate more accurate code completion, analysis, refactoring, and navigation. It combines its in-depth understanding of code structure with the intelligent development environment to simplify development of MacOS/IOS apps. The software provides all the tools developer want to swiftly execute ideas without a hassle.

One of its notable features is the refactoring and code generation module. This module provides multiple functionalities that handle routine errands and enables developers to focus on the most important tasks. It provides a wide range of code refactorings that empower you to smoothly improve the code design. Additionally, the live templates are innovative code snippets that enable the creation of complex language construct with a few keystrokes. With the live templates, it’s a breeze to create NSLog calls, loops, and property declaration.

AppCode provides a customizable user interface. It allows developers to tweak the tools and create a personalized AppCode user interface that complements the way they work. Also, the application comes with a default keyboard layout designed with convenience in mind. Better still, it permits you to customize your own or utilize the specific layouts such as those provided by IntelliJ IDEA, or Xcode.

With the easy-to-use unit test runner, developers can initiate test-driven development. The unit test runner displays the progress of the whole test execution and provides a tree format view for the active tests. It exhibits out-of-the-box support for XCTest, OCUnit, Kiwi, and Google Test frameworks. Developers can easily run single or multiple tests in one go, without the need for additional configuration.

AppCode Position In Our Categories

Since companies have special business needs, it is wise they avoid seeking an all-in-one, ideal software. Needless to say, it would be futile to try to pinpoint such application even among sought-after software solutions. The best step to do would be to write down the different essential functions that merit deliberation such as essential features, pricing, technical skill capability of staff, business size, etc. Thereafter, you must do the product research thoroughly. Browse over these AppCode reviews and check out the other software systems in your shortlist more closely. Such well-rounded product investigation guarantee you weed out unfit apps and buy the system which offers all the aspects your business requires for optimal results.

Position of AppCode in our main categories:

TOP 20

AppCode is one of the top 20 IDE Software products

If you are interested in AppCode it could also be a good idea to investigate other subcategories of IDE Software listed in our database of SaaS software reviews.

It's crucial to note that almost no service in the IDE Software category is going to be a perfect solution able to match all the needs of different business types, sizes and industries. It may be a good idea to read a few AppCode IDE Software reviews first as certain solutions may dominate only in a really small group of applications or be designed with a really specific type of industry in mind. Others may work with an intention of being simple and intuitive and therefore lack complex features desired by more experienced users. There are also apps that support a wide group of users and give you a powerful feature set, but that usually comes at a more significant cost of such a service. Ensure you're aware of your needs so that you choose a service that provides all the functionalities you look for.

PROS: I like how good this tool works as a replacement for Xcode. I can use it when making iOS applications in Swift, and I don't have to worry about adapting to it since all the short cut kets and key mappings I am already used to are also here. All the same, plugins are also available, and I have to say managing them is easier to do here than it was on Xcode.

CONS: One thing I think they can do for future versions is to have either a simulator or emulator available for machines that run on Linux on Windows. This is because this currently only runs on Macs. I also would like to see an option where I can write and check for syntax errors in Swift code in future versions of this.

PROS: I have to say that I have not encountered another software that matches this one's refactoring tool. When it comes to extending a function, I can start right at the caller space and have the original function be refactored.

CONS: There are areas where Xcode has got this beat, such as debugging and iOS simulator integration.

PROS: There are multiple things that I like about this. First off, the design and controls are similar to other products, so switching to it from another software can be done easily. I also like how the debug mode here is extended, giving it an edge over something like Xcode. The hotkeys and appearance of the set up can be customized, and this flexibility is definitely something that I appreciate. The team behind this constantly maintains it as well and provides support for real devices, simulators, Objective C and Swift, which I appreciate.

CONS: I would really like future versions of this to be able to run one separate test in a test class. As of the moment, you can only run the whole class, and I think adding this capability in the future would greatly improve the user experience.

PROS: I like how much you can customize this. Things such as the code style, color, and font can be changed and customized to your liking. I also appreciate how this has made my job easier thanks to its auto-complete feature. This tool has even pointed out functions or class that I've overlooked and have ended up being useful to me in my work.

CONS: I've encountered several problems when using this. One is, I can access Mission Controls, the Menu bar, or Launchpad when I maximize the programming screen. I've also experienced having the screen become obtrusive and flashy when I scroll. I also think a more consumer-friendly price should be considered since I stopped using once my free trial is over. I considered buying it but $90 is beyond my budget.

PROS: I am satisfied with this product and I have to say that it has made the code writing experience a better one. I like how many languages it supports, ranging from JavaScript, Swift, Objective-C, and C++, among others. I also appreciate the auto-complete feature, and how refactoring is so much easier to do now compared to other tools.

CONS: Some things that can be improved. For one, this isn't the most user-friendly tool for beginners, and they will have to contend with a steep learning curve. The start-up process could be a little quicker as well. They could also make future versions of this lighter because the current one takes up a lot of resources on your desktop or your laptop.

PROS: Aside from how effective it is, I like how it minimizes errors in your work thanks to the great revision structure they have in place. The reports and revisions you get are constant, so the number of errors that you overlook are lessened. The code shortcuts they provide also make it easier to rectify those errors. Finally, the appearance is just so clean and comfortable that using this tool just makes the whole process refreshing.

CONS: The biggest complaint I have is that no version of this that is available for Windows. You won't have a chance to use this unless you have a Mac. They can also improve on the testing, as currently you can only execute one at a time and this just slows down the whole process.

PROS: Compared with Xcode, this works faster and doesn't crash that often. I appreciate that I can write using C and C++ using this tool and that the plugins I get are very useful. The customer support is also great. Overall, this has made the iOS/macOS code I write more elegant.

CONS: As a former Xcode user, it did take me some time to get the hang of this. I also have to point out that compared to Xcode, debugging on this tool is harder to do.
