What are the best aspects of this product?
Mendix gave me the opportunity to convert ideas into working prototypes at blistering speeds. It's great to show your ability to business stakeholder on working prototypes in a matter of hours instead of days, or days instead of weeks/months. When the app is launched and it comes to maintenance, its model-based development allows other people's "code" to be readable. If you're in need of added power, Java is a matter of clicks away. If you have know-how and you take yoru time, just about anything can be tweaked to your needs.
What aspects are problematic or could work better?
Its ease in creating a prototype can sometimes obscure the intricate aspects that come with new business process implementation in an app that's already deployed. With that in mind, that's more of a stakeholder management and Mendix marketing problem than a technical issue. Mendix makes it easy for re-factoring. They'll recommend suggestions on enhancing performance for an overgrown app.
What specific problems in your company were solved by this product?
I've mostly made use of Mendix in replacing current business processes deployed in other platforms. I deploy newer ones that are still being operated on paper. I als add new user-facing features linking other back-end services. I'd say Medix is that "glue" and "layer of presentation" some enterprise systems I'm currently operating. It's biggest advantage is development speed, out-of-the-box responsiveness, and being browser reliant.
