Onshape Review

Onshape
Our score: 8.9 User satisfaction: 89%

What is Onshape?

Onshape is a cloud-based 3D CAD platform designed to help cloud forward and innovative designers, engineers, and manufacturers to work together from any device and web browser. The system provides built-in collaboration features, design, and version tools that make it easy to build products quickly and with fewer problems. It gives all design teams secure and instantaneous access to the single master CAD data version without the hassle of copying files or software licenses.

Onshape provides a robust set of features which include: on-cloud access, part modeling, drawings, assembly modeling, sharing & collaboration, import/export, and data management. All the features are available in each of its three subscriptions (free, professional plan, and the enterprise plan) and have no expiration date.

Overview of Onshape Benefits

Onshape is a fully reimagined CAD for the modern cloud era. The software provides revolutionary parametric 3D modeling and completely associative 2D drawings. In addition, the system allows for a top-down design with in-context editing and multipart modeling. It also comes with robust, built-in tools which allow for the creation of custom features.

Moreover, with the Onshape solution, you get convenient access anywhere anytime. It allows your team to work on a single CAD system and CAD data simultaneously. Besides, all the model parts and the CAD data can easily be accessed from any cross-platform web browser, tablets, and IOS/Android phones. What’s more; no service pack, license keys, or downloads is required for the access. Besides, it protects data by allowing the administrator to instantly change access privileges immediately after the teams change.

Additionally, its unprecedented security and control are commendable. The platform puts you in control of your data and allows you to get more people involved without compromising the speed of the design process. Your collaborators get revocable, limited access to the design and you retain the freedom to simultaneously edit assemblies and parts for better product development.

Unlike other legacy CAD system which stores data in files, Onshape utilizes databases for data storage. This removes the need for file backups, servers, and many other hidden IT infrastructure costs. In addition, this form of storage enables everyone to see the design changes made by other team members.

Onshape Position In Our Categories

Because companies have special business-related demands, it is only reasonable that they abstain from paying for a one-size-fits-all, “perfect” business program. Just the same, it would be difficult to try to find such an app even among well-known software products. The best thing to undertake would be to list the various chief functions that demand examination including major features, packages, technical skill aptitude of staff, business size, etc. Then, you should perform the research systematically. Read some Onshape reviews and scrutinize each of the software programs in your list more closely. Such comprehensive product research makes sure you avoid unfit applications and pay for the one which includes all the function your business requires to be successful.

Position of Onshape in our main categories:

Onshape is one of the top 20 Graphic Design Software products

If you are considering Onshape it may also be beneficial to check out other subcategories of Graphic Design Software collected in our database of B2B software reviews.

Organizations have diverse wants and requirements and no software application can be just right in such a condition. It is futile to try to find an ideal off-the-shelf software product that meets all your business needs. The intelligent thing to do would be to modify the application for your unique wants, worker skill levels, finances, and other factors. For these reasons, do not hurry and pay for well-publicized trendy systems. Though these may be widely used, they may not be the ideal fit for your unique wants. Do your homework, look into each short-listed platform in detail, read a few Onshape Graphic Design Software reviews, speak to the seller for explanations, and finally settle for the app that provides what you require.

PROS: There are a number of things that I like about this program, all of which give me the impression that this program really is the best of its kind. I like how easy it is to collaborate thanks to the fact that this is a web-based program. The fact that I don't need to install something or wait for updates is also something that I appreciate. The regular introduction of features are also appreciated. The newest feature, "Mates," has also made it easy to mate two instances and I've never been more satisfied.

CONS: When I finally decided to use this program, making the transition from the old one I was using was admittedly a very long process. I wish that there was more compatibility with other programs to make transitions easier but other than that I think this is really an exceptional program.

PROS: The emphasis on collaborative use is something I am very impressed by, even if we as a company are only beginning to explore this software. I like how user-friendly this program is, the resources it has, as well as the excellent documentation and the cloud-based software design. I think their versioning is okay, but I am really impressed by their cloud accessibility.

CONS: An improvement that I'd like to see is telephone tech support, although I think that would require a lot of money and don't expect them to introduce this anytime soon.

PROS: I have to admit that it took me some time to get used to working with this program, even with several years of parametric CAD software experience. That said, once I got over the learnning curve I ended up liking this more than the other ones I've been using. I like how much easier and faster it is to use compared to the CAD software I have been using before. There are a number of features that I really like, such as the multi-part files, the powerful version control, and the mobile application. Other things I appreciate are the fact that i can run it on my Mac, how detailed the document histories are, and how mating works in assemblies. The lower cost is also very much appreciated. I also found impressive how quickly this program was updated. It seems like it only takes days or weeks before bugs are fixed and new features are introduced.

CONS: An obvious disadvantage with this being browser-based is that I need to have an internet connection if I want to use it. Yes, I can use my phone to set up a hotspot, but there are times when I just want the convenience of being able to work offline. This is why I'd really appreciate it if an offline version is introduced. I'd also like for this program to be available to more people, since there used to be a free version available. I can see this being really helpful to students and independent makers.

PROS: I like the fact that it is web-based because it allows me to work from any location. The fact that it stays responsive is a bonus that I really appreciate. The company and I are impressed with it that we've adopted it for our research and development team and our HS Robotics team. I like how this program is simple enough to be run on a Chromebook because it has resulted in everybody on the HS team being able to use it. This has definitely improved things for them since they can get the information they need to formulate a strategy, even if they aren't contributing directly to the design. I am impressed that they can get enough information to determine camera mounting, electronics wiring, and a number of other options. Another that impressed me was how I didn't need to install a Windows emulation to be able to run it on my iMac, since it is web-based after all. A lot of engineering software tools would require me to do that since their approach is mostly centered on Microsoft.

CONS: The problem I have sin't with the program itself but with my own servers, since redrawing takes longer than usual when my servers are slow. Other than that there isn't anything that I can complain about when it comes to this program.

PROS: There are so many thing that impressed me when it comes to this tool. For one, I was impressed that I could change the model with the client watching it in real time, making it easy for them to understand the changes I implemented. I definitely like that I no longer have to wait for files to be transferred and reviewed before I can work on them. The collaborative nature is also something I appreciate since I can have teammates help me out in case the lead time for a large job is too short. I am also impressed that I can set my parameters from drop down lists since it cuts down the time I spend looking for the part that I need. The mobility it provides me is also something I appreciate, since I can use my tablet, laptop, or phone to run it wherever I may be. Another impressive aspect is how regularly their updates arrive, which means any problems i may have will probably be addressed in a future update. I can say with full confidence that none of the other programs out there can match this one.

CONS: I have to admit that transferring files and datas from a different CAD system is a cumbersome and long affair. It also took me some time to get used to the mate system, particularly with the fact that the assembly environment didn't have planes. I feel like if this was more intuitive or if there were more resources available to me, learning to use these features would proceed much more quickly.

PROS: I like the fact that it is web-based, since I not only get to work wherever I am, I also don't have to deal with software downloads that are often complicated and cumbersome, especially in a high IT security environment. I am also impresssed that I don't have to deal with up-sells or have to download anything to get the latest version of this software.

CONS: I don't have any problems with this program, but my teammates do want a McMaster Carr interface. If more people ask for it I think it's a change that can be implemented in future versions.

PROS: I am amazed by how easy it is for project teammates to share using this program. I am also impressed with how versions and revisions are handled; definitely an improvement over another program that we had been using. I also like that we only needed to look in one location since assemblies and parts were all gathered in one place. It has definitely made it harder for me to go back to the program we have been using previously, since this one is really miles ahead of it.

CONS: If there's one thing that our old program used better than this one is that it could come up with simple solution capabilities. Unfortunately, you can't do the same with this one.

PROS: The things that stood out to me the most were the interactions with developers, the customer support provided, and the cost. I liked all of these aspects, and I was also impressed how this program didn't rely on a file structure. I also like how easy it is to reference the CAD data, and in multiple ways as well. Another plus is that I retain control and visibility over the referenced version.

CONS: First off, new users or people who've used other programs will have to contend with a steep learning curve since the file based data structure is not followed. They'd also have to figure out how branches, releases, revisions, and versions can be best executed by this tool. I'd also like to see some advanced features included like animations, rendering, and basic simulation.

PROS: I only started using this program because it was the cheaper option compared to the one I was initally eyeing. I thought that if I didn't like this program, I could make the transition to the more expensive one. Luckily, this program has been exceptional and I haven't ditched it yet. Both me and my clients appreciate the fact that models can be seen on almost any device, whether it is their smartphone or their computer. I was also impressed that my clients could follow me in real time and that I could easily share my models. Another thing that impressed me was how quickly their customer support team provided solutions for me whenever I reached out to them with an issue. In fact, I could even see what exactly they're doing, so every call with them is also a learning opportunity. I also like the regularity of the bug fixes and updates, and that they are automatically implemented without me having to do anything.

CONS: There are a number of improvements I'd like to see when it comes to this program. For one thing, I would like to be able to make a back up copy of documents I am working on, so that I can continue working even during the occasions where I am unable to access the cloud. It would also be great if there was a way to get an offline mode because I may not always be in a location that has good internet. Providing an offline mode would spare me the slow speeds I encounter whenever I am in a location that has a weak internet signal.

PROS: The first thing that comes to mind when I think of things that I like about this program is the fact that crashes are no longer a regular occurence. I also like the follow screen feature and other collaborative tools. Another thing that I found impressive was how quickly and regularly they add new features. If a user is patient enough, the feature they've been asking will probably be part of the program in a couple of months.

CONS: Like I said, a lot of the features I'm looking for will probably be added in a few months, so I don't see the need to complain about them. What I do wish for is for an offline version so I can still use this even without an internet connection. It's the only thing I can legitimately complain about.

PROS: Before this program, I was in a director role where I didn't so much use similar programs but simply had to input my drafting directions, carve butter foirms, and render. When I finally dove into using programs like this, I had to get the hang of parametrics, even with my decades of experience. It was this program in particular that I took a shine to. I like the user interface and layout and I was impressed with how advanced the sheet metal functions were. I also appreciated how easy it was to transfer my outputs to our manufacturing facilities in Asia. Another thing that impressed me was how quickly I adapted to using it, because my speed had increased by the time I was on my third project. A lot of the features were intuitive which made it really easy to adapt.

CONS: I really wish that resources, tutorials, and knowledge bases for this program was more accessible and available. The ones that come with the program are for those who are new to the program, and I'm ready to take on more advanced things. While I've been able to find some webinars that have been pre-recorded, most of them delve into a specific issue and don't tackle the program in a more general way, which is the type of instruction I am looking for. I also have trouble with getting bolts with threads when using the auto function of placing ANSI fasteners. Perhaps this is because I have not configured the program properly or there's a setting I need to turn on, but I honestly can't spare the time to look for a solution online. This is why I think the best improvement they could introduce are better resources on using this program.

PROS: There are a number of things about this program that I'm really impressed with and has me convinced that this is what similar programs should aim for. I like how sleek their user interface is and how it works on both mobile devices and desktop computers. Because of those features, the design process is now more efficient and I definitely appreciate that. I also like how helpful the customer support team, as well as how new features, updates, and upgrades are released regularly.

CONS: There were a few bumps when I first started using this program because a number of features I had gotten used to from other similar programs were not present here. However, this was quickly resolved by the regular updates and now I don't really have anything I can complain about.

PROS: There are a lot of things to like about this program. Unlike the similar program I have been using beforehand, this hardly crashes whenever I am creating or editing a sheet metal part. I like that there are no more dangling dimensions because this means that I won't have to do all of my drawings again and again. I was also impressed that this was user-friendly enough even for people who have no experience with CAD, because it allowed my clients to easily review my drawings. Another thing that I definitely appreciate is the savings I've made since I no longer have to pay for a web meeting hosting plan or an FTP site.

CONS: Updates I'd like to see in the future include an automatic center mark creator, activated by simply clicking a view. i would also like to have the ability to circle parts of the drawing where spot welds should be made. I'd also want new releases to further develop sheet metal, such as brdge lances and the like.

PROS: I was using a different program before making the transition to this one and I have to say that I am impressed with how they handle creating content. I thnk that it really lets you put out what you intended to do in the first place. I had initially used this the same way I was using my previous program, which was not the best way to go about it. When I turned to the tutorials, I saw what they were trying to do and ended up liking it. I like that they have simplified the process; I no longer have to deal with a seemingly endless permutation table. Whether it is on the assembly level or on the part level, configurations are done exactly the same way. I was also impressed with how user-friendly and useful the PDM system is. It was a great idea to have it be in the cloud since I no longer have to deal with installation issues, server connectivity issues, or server maintenance. The fact that it is cloud-based also means I no longer have to worry about saving, which isw something that I definitely appreciate. Another impressive feature that I've only seen with this program is the ability to see earlier versions of the work so I can check all the steps and processes that have been performed.

CONS: I am not happy with these program's drawings, since I feel like they do not match the usefulness of the other featyres of this program. For one thing, I have to enter chamfers manually, and when I change the chamfer size it results in the parametric relationship being broken. It also takes a lot of work to align a broken view to a related view, which is irritating to have to deal with. I also wish I did not have to either shrink drawings or make a bigger one to make it fit on the page since section views can't be broken. I'd also like to see a devoted weldment tool in future version, because the feature script currently in place doesn't work that smoothly when coming up with new profiles and requires a lot of troubleshooting in case a mistake is made. I'd also like to use the current center of mass icon for this program for design purposes. Another thing that I think would be a useful addition are section properties. Since this program is constantly updating anyway, I'm looking forward to see all these improvements implemented in the future.
