What is OpenStudio?
OpenStudio is open-source software development kit (SDK) developed by the US Department of Energy for building energy modeling (BEM). It is a cross-platform (Windows, Mac, and Linux) collection of software tools, designed to support whole building energy modeling using EnergyPlus and advanced daylight analysis using Radiance.
The OpenStudio project is comprised of a few example applications. These applications include a plug-in for the SketchUp 3D drawing program, a results viewer, a graphical model editing tool, and a parametric analysis tool. The applications demonstrate the capabilities of the SDK and integration practices and are also usable as individual applications.

OpenStudio enables third parties to concentrate on adding separate differentiating value and on serving their clients by giving them a common core infrastructure. BEM engines such as EnergyPlus work with applications through large, static, and in many cases, bulky files.
OpenStudio eases and speeds up application development by showing inputs and outputs of EnergyPlus as a dynamic, object-oriented data model with application programming interface (API), a construct that is much easier for applications to work with. On top of the low-level model and result access, OpenStudio gives common high-level abstractions such as space types and spaces, as well as functionalities like instantiation and configuration of standard HVAC systems.
Finally, in addition to EnergyPlus, OpenStudio also transfers inputs for and import results from other engines like the Radiance lighting engine and the CONTAM airflow engine, supporting multiple analyses from a single model.
A main focus of the OpenStudio project is support for large-scale analysis. These comprise of design optimization, model input calibration, building stock analysis to determine buildings that meet the criteria of specific programs, or prototype analysis to create typical savings values.
In December 2016, DOE and the national labs rolled out OpenStudio 2.0, a re-factored re-engineered version of OpenStudio that stresses the platform’s commitment to supporting developers. The latest version is aimed at making the creation and integration of BEM applications and services even easier and more productive.
