OpenVPN Review

OpenVPN
Our score: 8.8 User satisfaction: 98%

What is OpenVPN?

OpenVPN is a feature-rich network tunneling VPN application. The solution integrates the server with other utilities to accommodate various environments like Mac, Windows, Ubuntu, and Linux. There are also other operating systems supported such as RedHat, Fedora, CentOS, Debian, and openSUSE.

With OpenVPN, users have access to numerous user-definable settings so they can have it set up the way they want. The application also allows the configuration of internal network access methods, cloud-based network resources, and local programs.

OpenVPN also provides protection for virtual appliances, Amazon Cloud private networks, and CloudSigma servers. These connections afford users the ability to apply stringent security protocols on their servers without having to resort to complicated installations.

Overview of OpenVPN Benefits

Open Source Software

OpenVPN enables users to create clients on any device or operating system without constraints. At the same, the can design a user interface by utilizing the management interface while interoperating with other app features like two-factor authentication.

Stringent Authentications

With OpenVPN, users can come up with their own authentication challenges to robustly protect their serves. This enables them to ensure that only those with the right set of responses gain access and to discourage bots and malicious individuals.

Single Sign-On Implementation

OpenVPN allows the single sign-on of users to the networks. Doing so is not even complicated—developers only need to add several lines of code to enable this programming capability. This makes it convenient for users as they only have to log their account details once, then they can go about their tasks with ease.

Integrated Solution with API Support

OpenVPN supports MacOS X Keychain and Windows Crypto API when it comes to storing keys. On top of that, the client also integrates with MacOS X, provides API and multi-daemon support, plus adaptive protocol support.

Disabled Web

OpenVPN has a feature that locks web functions while having ports remain open to the internet. This way, users do not have to open any browser so they can use browser-related security issues.

Browse over these OpenVPN evaluations and check out each of the software systems in your list more closely. Such comprehensive research ensure you keep away from unsuitable apps and choose the system that has all the features you require business requires.

OpenVPN is one of the top 50 VPN Services products

If you are considering OpenVPN it could also be a good idea to analyze other subcategories of VPN Services listed in our database of SaaS software reviews.

Organizations have different needs and requirements and no software solution can be perfect in such a scenario. It is pointless to try to find a perfect out-of-the-box software app that fulfills all your business needs. The wise thing to do would be to adapt the solution for your special wants, staff member skill levels, finances, and other elements. For these reasons, do not hurry and subscribe to well-publicized popular systems. Though these may be widely used, they may not be the best fit for your specific wants. Do your homework, investigate each short-listed system in detail, read a few OpenVPN VPN Services reviews, call the maker for clarifications, and finally settle for the application that offers what you want.

PROS: It’s convenient for our staff because it allows access to restricted sites, even if they don’t have an account on our OpenVPN enterprise platform. It provides reliable security as well, especially for our back-end and local functions. Moreover, it comes in cheap and practical price rates.

CONS: I can’t find any problem with the OpenVPN platform. However, I feel its paid licenses are quite expensive than other VPNs.

PROS: This app is amazingly easy to use, and it efficiently serves our company's needs. We only need to open it to connect with different Windows from all over the world. It’s also possible to use cookies with this app. This is great for us to conduct anonymous analytics over our websites.

CONS: This VPN requires the use of a long password to log in, and there are no available options to keep passwords in its system. This pushes me to save my password in a text file, then copy-paste it each time I log in. I find this process quite inconvenient.

It features high-security encryption which helps protect data transfer and communication lines. OpenVPN is also easy and quick to use, which gives big points for convenience.

PROS: This is a trusty VPN app that lets me connect to servers conveniently. It’s a stable platform that features high-security options and offers compatible versions for mobile. This allows me to remotely connect to office-based resources even while at home or on travel. Not to mention it’s also practical in terms of price, that’s why we’ve been using it in the company for quite a long time now.

CONS: This is a great and quality VPN app, but its interface lacks a lot of advances and automated features. It has problems with updates too. I can’t easily determine the names of new versions or releases to probably grab it.

PROS: Managing servers is a lot easier with an OpenVPN. It helps me connect through private VPN servers using any device, or connect to hotspot networks without worries. This helps me safely and securely connect to the web while at home, at the office, or in public places.

CONS: The free version of OpenVPN only allows up to 2 devices. This is quite a problem when I need to connect three or more.

PROS: This is a great app that is compatible with many OS we have such as Windows, Linux, Android and Apple. It has a user-friendly interface as well, although users must properly use its features for the app to work well. For example, you must remember to click “connect” before opening other features. Also, you won’t have problems in directly linking one OpenVPN router to another through tunneling connections.

CONS: The interface is so simple, but it lacks useful features that could have been helpful. For example, it has no meters of CPU server usage or bandwidth allocations.

PROS: I like the fact that OpenVPN is open-source software. It has light versions for PC and mobile operating systems, that’s why we use it in many of our devices. We have no difficulties in tweaking servers and client points as well.

CONS: It has a significant downside. OpenVPN sometimes causes our internet connection speed to drastically decrease.

PROS: This VPN app helps me do my administrative tasks, even when I’m miles away from the office. I only have to connect with our company servers regardless of my location, then I can easily access our files and resources. This is greatly helpful when I’m on travel, and even when I transferred to a different state for my loved ones.

CONS: Missing an update is quite inconvenient. I need to call the support team for help in fixing such issues.

PROS: Once you grasp the app well, it’s certainly easy to set and use. It also features an option to remember my credentials, which removes the need for me to enter it each time I use the app.

CONS: there are times when it suddenly disconnects, and it’s quite difficult to reconnect after restarting the app. That’s probably because the servers are on maintenance or having errors during those instances. I also experience a decrease in connection speed, especially when I’m using the same account on two different devices.

PROS: This open-source app is great in establishing VPN infrastructures, with its compatibility for most OS as a big plus. It helps in securely creating tunnels from host to client devices, which is great in making firewalls without tweaking setups, or making connections with non-NATO computers. Data transfer security is fantastic as well since it features the OpenSSL library which activates all possible and needed encryptions.

CONS: It’s hard for newbies to create their servers using this app. They must learn server management beforehand.

PROS: I trust and use this fantastic but free VPN for many years, even if it sometimes stumble upon errors. It features reliable servers, as well as it’s easy to set and control through a user-friendly interface. Its data protection and security help in preventing any information from leaking out too, which is great in keeping anonymity while online. This is highly recommended.

CONS: I encounter some problems with this VPN. It doesn’t have a stable connection, and it doesn’t notify when disconnection from a server happens. It’s a bit sluggish, doesn’t offer more security options, as well as it sometimes connects to a different server. It doesn’t have good user support too.
