More than just a video recording platform

What are the best aspects of this product?

Panopto can do more than just recording live videos. It also offers a screen recorder function that lets you create screencast videos easily. I find this feature very helpful especially when making quick tutorials for my students or demonstrating something to them.

What aspects are problematic or could work better?

I don’t see any cons of using the platform. But I won’t say it’s perfect either. There are some minor issues like losing access to some functionalities after an update (a problem you’ll experience if you’re not an administrator). There’s also a 30-seconds warning asking me about having a webcam or microphone (which is not needed since I’m also using the screen recorder). It pop-ups whenever I’m creating screencasts which are pretty annoying because it interrupts the recording and even appears in the final output. I have to deal with it always and click ignore. I also have to edit the video just to get rid of the warning sign. I tried to look for a way to get rid of the message but I think they are just supposed to be there. It would be nice if the vendor will consider adding an option to turn off the message.

What specific problems in your company were solved by this product?

We use Panopto for several purposes. First, our faculty uses it to record their lectures for students to view anytime they want to review their lessons or need to catch up. With easily accessible recordings, students don’t have to worry about missing a lesson anymore. Our online instructors also use this system to record their lectures for their online students. Apart from that, we use it to create training courses for new staff and record meetings. The ability to embed our video files into our secured LMS is also very helpful in ensuring that only the authorized viewers can access the files. We are still figuring out what we can do to maximize the value of the platform. Right now, we are working on implementing the system as the organization’s main tool for creating videos and contents.
