SketchUp Review

SketchUp
Our score: 8.9 User satisfaction: 97%

What is SketchUp?

SketchUp is an intuitive CAD solution that excels in creating and editing 2D and 3D concepts. The reliable application helps users to create impressive 3D models of interiors, furniture, landscapes and more. Its real forte is the ease of use which is backed by a set of powerful, professional-quality features and timely support.

Some of its built-in features include lighting effects, textures, a layer manager, and animations. Although the application doesn’t offer a wide range of built-in models, it provides unique access to Trimble’s 3D warehouse. It avails all the symbols and models which ensure CAD designers of different skill level achieve the desired results. However, Sketchup’s powerful edge is drawn back by the lack of a house wizard and a wall tool.

Overview of SketchUp Benefits

SketchUp is a computer-aided design solution best known by the ease of use. Using the application is as simple as drawing with a pen and paper. It utilizes the direct editing push and pulls technology which ensures users get up to speed in generating the everyday items. Its user interface, on the other hand, imitates a dead simple UI, but it’s well-crafted to rival the most powerful CAD software around.

Maneuvering around this program is pretty easy thanks to the highly customizable palettes. The program gives you the freedom to add, remove, or rearrange the palettes to appear the way you want. Its large icon replaces the feature list of most CAD software thereby allowing the user to easily find the commands. Most the features provided by Sketchup are fundamentally focused on 3D designing. However, the program has features and tools that support 2D designing. This makes it an ideal application for beginners looking to plan, visualize, and communicate future construction projects.

There are three modules of Sketchup available. The Sketchup Free, which is the simplest and most accessible 3D modeler around; Sketchup for school, a core modeler that is available in web browsers; and the SketchUp Pro a paid version that provides additional functionality. These modules cover a wide scope and ensure there is a perfect version for different designer across the entire industry.

SketchUp Position In Our Categories

Keeping in mind companies have their own business requirements, it is practical that they avoid settling on an all-encompassing, “perfect” business program. Still, it would be almost impossible to come across such a software product even among popular software systems. The rational step to undertake is to narrow down the varied main factors that necessitate inspection like major features, plans, skill ability of staff, organizational size, etc. Next, you must conduct the research fully. Have a look at these SketchUp evaluations and look into each of the applications in your list in detail. Such comprehensive research ascertains you keep away from poorly fit applications and buy the one that includes all the tools your business requires.

Position of SketchUp in our main categories:

TOP 10

SketchUp is one of the top 10 Architecture Software products

TOP 20

SketchUp is one of the 20 Building Information Modeling Software - BIM products

Since each enterprise has specific business wants, it is sensible for them to desist from searching for a one-size-fits-all faultless software solution. Needless to say, it would be useless to try to find such a platform even among market-leading software solutions. The clever thing to do would be to list the various important elements that require consideration such as main features, budget, skill levels of employees, company size etc. Then, you should do your research thoroughly. Read some SketchUp Architecture Software reviews and investigate each of the other systems in your shortlist in detail. Such in-depth groundwork can ensure you reject ill-fitting applications and choose the app that offers all the elements you need for business success.

PROS: I like how you can use SketchUp. It's comparable to sketching up cartoon figures. It adds a bit of fun to creating important models. I've been using this with Infraworks Software.

CONS: The one thing that I disapprove is how they carried out their texturing. I feel it needs to be more user-friendly including its export area. I faced issues where certain texture won't push through whenever I'm exporting things to another format. I tend to face this problem whenever I import files directly to Infraworks.

PROS: Easy to use 3d modeling tool. Quickly create models, images etc. for illustration purposes.

CONS: I paid for sketchup pro which was advertised with a set of features. One feature was the "add location" tool which allows you to geolocate and pull in google earth imagery and terrain data. I just discovered that Trimble disabled this feature in the version I bought and the only way I can get the feature back is to pay them more money! This is robbery. Plain and simple. If you bought a car with navigation and then a year later you go to use the nav and it says "we're sorry, you can't use this anymore. Please contact us". When you contact the dealer they tell you that you have to pay more money to use the nav. If a car manufacturer did that there would be a class action lawsuit in no time flat. They offer ZERO solutions for this problem other than paying them more money which is NOT going to happen. They should have offered people who had the older version a free one time upgrade to the version that has that feature. Instead, their response is, sorry, those features don't work now.

PROS: SketchUp is the application for easy yet high-quality drawing and 3D modeling. The user has options on the interface and it can be personalized further so it adapts to your workflow. Its tools are easy to handle, and their app is always up-to-date. I really love that importing from different formats and exporting to different formats does not reduce the quality of the renders.

CONS: Fatal Errors. It happens on my PC whenever it handles heavy files, but at the very least the file is recoverable whenever the app crashes.

PROS: Being able to put up a design and presenting them to customers quickly. At the moment, I'm using SketchUp for designing photo voltaic solar installation for both business owners and home owners. Thanks to my fluency in architecture design, Sketchup makes it possible for me to visualize design with my customers. This can be done by means of a presentation in rendering a layout for their approval.

CONS: Trying to think about the things I ate. Unfortunately, I'm running out of ideas. I've been designing with Sketchup for a long while now. UI is super friendly. I'm constantly customizing the toolbar settings.

PROS: The simplicity in which you can create 3D and editing it is one of the many wonderful things with SketchUp. Once you come up with a basic drafted plan in Autocad, the massing model can successfully be made within minutes. I've been utilizing SketchUp for urban planning and building scale. It gave me precise output in terms of quality.

CONS: Two things I hate with SketchUp. One is not having the ability to edit and the poly-lines manipulation suck (a lot simpler to do via AutoCAD). Poly-lines with curves has a tendency to be in segments. This could be problematic it as the process of selection becomes tedious from time to time which could lead you to miss out on some segments.

CONS: We utilize SketchUp Pro in modelling intricate buildings. It comes complete with finishes, lighting, furniture, equipment, and others. PROS: SketchUp makes it possible for any user to craft a 3D model with a precise scale. It allows for the conceptualiziation and visualization of designs in a real-world scenario. What's most useful is being able to import Google Earth maps into a SketchUp creation. It not only envisions how a space would appear, but it also invovles the landscape and buildings around it.

CONS: Unless you're running a high-end PC (like those intended for intensive gaming and graphics), SketchUp models will relatively slow down in a shorter period of time. This could be due to the huge size in files. Response delays to commands and migrating throughmodels when utilzing 3D items over 2D items are significant factors. It can be challenging to move, stretch out, and rotate objects.

PROS: Just about everything! I like how you can convert basic lines/shapes and start making your own dream building. Simplified shortcut commands allow for hand motion. You can translate your concentration from what you have in your head. Then moving that to the screen.

CONS: Basically nothing. I guess when you tend to overwork and your screen suddenly "bug splats." It can be annoying to experience from time to time. But that's understandable for the time spent in creating a model. If there's one tiny problem I'd go for it's the time of expiration of their license.

Great interoperability with other programs. Having the ability to work on all PCs is with backwards compatibility is uber simple.

CONS: If I need to nit-pick, it would be not being able to rotate the view in a 2D plan view. I find this annoying. But to be fair, it's what you get from a by-product of a single-window. I'll include this in the wish list! Text editing wasn't that great.

PROS: SketchUp happens to be simplest CAD programs for learning. The UI is direct to the point. It's easy and simple. Once you have an idea of the commands, you can learn as you playing along.

CONS: I don't favor how SketchUp would segregate lines into segments. I was hoping there was some kind of an option in keeping the line in one piece. This is way better than breaking things up by intersection.
