What are the best aspects of this product?
One thing I favor with NetBackup is how it can offer support for the products that I'm currently using. It's able to back up VCenter and MSSQL. Its policiesn enables me to set a schedule for backups according to the customer's requirements and time frame. I love having the option of utilzing a command line interface for certain jobs. I also like the fact that Symantec wanted to create their very own disk appliances that integrate well with their current software.
What aspects are problematic or could work better?
There's nothing much to hate. It'd be a treat if there's one pane of glass made for backups and archiving. I'd like to have a reporting system made within the software itself so there's no need to deal with a separate software. I'd also recommend logs access directly from the GUI as opposed to combing through each client/master/media server just to have a look at them. Trobleshooting would be a lot simpler this way.
What specific problems in your company were solved by this product?
Backups-to-tape can be a slow and housing tapes can be expensive. This is even more true when dealing with a big environment. But backing up to disk changed the game completely. Speedy backups are awesome. Combine that with offsite replication and you're set.
