What is VirtualDub?
VirtualDub is a free, open-source video capture and processing software designed for 32/64 bit Windows platform. Although this application is not endowed with the editing power of pro editors like Adobe Premiere, it’s reliably fast in linear operations. At its price tag (free), the platform holds immense potential and its ability to compression video without altering the quality is impressive.
The software doesn’t rank as a fully-featured alternative, but it’s capable of accomplishing multiple tasks that would call for other separate applications. It can cut scenes, merge videos, convert scene, and apply different effects with ease. Some of its main features include: real-time downsizing, fractional frame rates, create openDML files, integrate volume meter, optimized disk access, field swapping, and noise reduction, and verbose monitoring.

VirtualDub is not a nonlinear editing tool but is capable of performing the functions of pro tools like Adobe Premier. The program is designed to process AVI files, but it’s also effective in handling BMP images and reading MPEG1 files. The application itself is easy to learn and use. It features a user interface that is seemingly awkward at first sight, but it’s very easy to understand with little practice. All function are placed logically on easily accessible menus. Besides, there are keyboard shortcuts that make it easy to perform the basic operations.
VirtualDub has more features than what one’d expect from freeware. The program can compress and convert audio and video files, capture, edit, filter, render video files plus many other functions. The edit menu presents basic operation such as copy, paste, cut, and delete. All these operations can be set to work effectively on any level of frames using the selection start and end features. The Go menu allows you to find a way to the ideal frame.
The application also provides capture features for the VFD drivers. The drivers are found in AVI2 files created when you capture videos using a TV tuner or other external device. The program can also take out and replace audio tracks without compromising the video. Besides, it features a hex editor and other useful tools for dumping an AVI file structure to get a compact description file for analyzing compatibility problems, remotely.
