I highly recommend GitHub for managing open source projects

What are the best aspects of this product?

If you are working on Open Source projects then you should try GitHub because it offers everything you need. I like that it’s powered by Git and you can switch to any other system if you want to all you have to do is to add a new remote and push. In addition, the service is free but if you want to use it as internal code then you have to pay for it. And last but not least, there are huge amount of integrations, you’ll get notifications in Slack, get project management planning with Waffle and many other things.

What aspects are problematic or could work better?

It would be great if you already have some experience with Git and you could ask for help from other people who already work with GitHub.

What specific problems in your company were solved by this product?

This is great tool for managing open source projects and you don’t have to roll your own. It is extremely helpful and useful tool for internal coding, there is version control, offsite backups and local backups for every machine. It integrates with many other tools for making project management, you can use built-in bug tracking, branching and merging tools. You can easily invite external people for your projects.
