What is Inkscape?

Inkscape is a free and open source vector graphics editor with a unique native format that differentiates it from similar programs (Adobe Illustrator, Corel Draw, Freehand, and Xara X). It has a clean, consistent, and very stable interface, and it uses SVG and Scalable Vector Graphics and an open XML-based W3C standard. SVG is considered as an excellent format for creating and designing logos and banners or any media that has been modified in vector mode. This is because the SVG format enables graphic designers and other professionals in the industries of marketing/branding, engineering/CAD, web graphics, and cartooning to create graphics that could be scaled to any size while retaining their original quality. Inkscape makes all of this possible.

At the same time, Inkscape is a cross-platform vector editing program so it has the capability to run on Windows, MAC OS X, and Linux distributions. The program is also referred to as flexible and versatile, offering a variety of tools with tool tips and useful information included on them. The development of Inkscape is open and community-oriented  which means as it adheres to open source standards, users could use and distribute  it free of cost as well as peek into its source code to be able to develop it further. Among its interesting features are objection creation and object manipulation, fill and stroke tools, paths operations, text support, rendering, and file formats.

Overview of Inkscape Benefits

The node editing functionality of Inkscape is one of its outstanding features. Nodes are the frameworks that show how vector graphics are created and they are associated to some mathematical operations. Nodes would enable artists and designers to manipulate objects, images, and graphics that are vectorized. Inkscape provides tools to move nodes and Bezier handles. Bezier handles are used to easily move nodes,

The node editing tools provided by Inkscape specifically for moving nodes include the insert nodes between segments, delete node, join selected nodes, break path of selected nodes, join selected end-nodes and add a new segment, make selected node a corner, make selected node smooth, make selected nodes symmetrical, make selected segments line and make selected segments curve.

When inserting nodes, users could insert tons of nodes, enabling them to manipulate many details of the object and move its edges in different ways. Deleting a nodes, would generate curves on edges. The break path of selected node would result to the forming of an object with a starting point and an end point instead of one fluid object. To straighten an edge of an object, users could choose the join selected nodes and a new segment. Meanwhile, if the tool for making selected node symmetrical is chosen, it would allow users to pull out one side of the handle and the other side would be scaled accordingly.

In addition to these node movement tools, Inkscape also has other node editing functionalities and one of them is its node alignment and distribution options. Here, users would be able to align nodes on a common vertical or horizontal line and  spread out nodes where the spaces between them are all even.

Another feature of Inkscape is its object creation functionality. This functionality highlight tools such as the pencil tool, drawing tool, calligraphy tool, shape tool and text tool. The pencil tool allows users to do freehand drawings and the pen tool is designed for making Benziar curves and straight lines. When freehand drawing is applied through the use of filled paths that represent calligraphic strokers, the calligraphy tool is selected to do the the work. Its text tool supports multi-line text and full-on canvas editing. Meanwhile, the bitmaps of objects could also be embedded and this is done by using a particular command. This feature enhances the artistic skills of users  as these tools offer room for creativity.

As it highlights its SVG format support, Inkscape is the perfect program used for generating  SVG format files and editing them as well. Furthermore, it enables users to do a live watching and editing of the document tree which is done in the XML editor. To export formats such as PNG, OpenDocument Drawing, DXF, sk1, PDF, EPS and PostScript; command line options are also provided. With this capability, users would be able to work on art works and graphics that require high scalability.

PROS: Since it’s free and open-source, there’s no problem acquiring it. You can get it whenever you want. No need for money. On top of that, it offers a lot of incredible features and tools so you can be as creative as you want when designing vector images. It lets you add almost anything you want to include in your graphics. It’s overall a great tool to use so it is not a surprise that many people love using it for vector graphics editing.

CONS: The tools can be a bit confusing and somehow overwhelming at first glance. But there are many tutorials and guides available online for beginners so it’s not that hard getting started with the system. Besides, the platform and the tools are pretty straightforward and designed to be easy to use.

PROS: What I like most about using this software is that it is open-source, free, lightweight, and got a nice and simple interface. And the tools are very easy to use and straightforward, which makes it a great option for those with no background in vector graphics editing or just don’t have the means to purchase the popular and costly apps like Adobe. Also, even if it’s free, it is still very compact. Lastly, you’ll never have a hard time learning how to use this tool. Apart from ease of use, there are many guides and tutorials available online.

CONS: Occasionally, the software crashes and it’s quite annoying. Also, I have to save my work in storage media and pen drives because there is no dedicated cloud server that can sync up all my files and work across devices. It’s pretty inconvenient to carry my external storage all the time! It’s also quite risky.

Ease of Use

PROS: It has an improved user interface. It offers the essentials for creating and editing vector graphics. It is compatible with 4k/HiDPI screens and supports different devices including Windows, Linux, and Mac. It lets users rotate as well as reflect canvases. It eliminates the options of huge number of strokes and allows many faster-plotting processes. Lastly, it uses the standard SVG specification of W3C which is based on XML.

CONS: The work area is different from Adobe Illustrator, CorelDraw, and Sketch so you need to learn to adjust. Also, while this tool is easy to use, you’ll still need good technical knowledge to get good results.

PROS: What I love the most about this app is its simple interface which makes learning the app easier. Unlike other solutions with a million different features and buttons, Inkspace got just enough easy to use features. It is less confusing and overwhelming and lets you do a lot of things. It is also easy to master the tools available.

CONS: The formatting options available are limited. I just wish they offer more so we can also be more flexible when it comes to media placements. Other than that, Inkspace is pretty good for me. It has everything I need to make a high-quality vector and graphics design.

Ease of Use

PROS: The pros of using this tool include its ease of use, the number of powerful support features, its responsive help tab, support for several different file formats, and the ability to come up with quality work. On top of that, all of the mentioned advantages can be acquired for free. You don’t have to pay any amount to acquire the product. Also, it is constantly updated which fixes bugs and keeps the app performing well. I am a graphic designer and have already used many other similar products and I can say that this is one good product for creating vector illustrations.

CONS: Since this software is open source, you should expect some flaws. In my experience, the things I could consider a drawback are its inability to work with high-resolution projects. Whenever I open a high resolution file, the software usually crashes and lags. Also, I find the features available a bit limited. Some of the tools I need aren’t available.

PROS: It is open-source, very user-friendly and intuitive. Creating vector graphics out of bit map as well as 2D graphics is very straightforward. On top of that, you can have this app for free.

CONS: It doesn't AI files and the only file format it supports is .png. The latter is the biggest con for me. Other than that, Inkscape helps us get the job done.

PROS: I've been using this vector graphics editor for months now and I love it! It's just exactly what I need. It is very light to use. I don't have to pay for monthly fees because it's free and it lets me get my work done. It has many great tools like the draw freehand lines feature which I enjoy as it lets me draw anything. Also, it allows the import of CorelDraw files as well as Adobe Illustrator files. I can easily create graphics and vectors using this tool.

CONS: No complaints so far. I have everything I need and all works fairly well.

PROS: Inkspace offers many good things. First and foremost, it is free and open-source. You don’t have to pay anything to acquire this product. Just download it for free on the vendor’s website and you’re good to go. Second, it lets you create and edit different types of graphics such as cartoons, logos, diagrams, and illustrations. And since the graphics are made with vectors, you can scale them to any size without losing its original resolution. Fourth, you can import files in different format types like .jpg, .tif, .bmp, and more. Lastly, it offers many tools like fusions and cuts, transparencies, shadows, and more to help you create whatever you need to create and make them look professional.

CONS: There are many restrictions on the use of features and tools. Aside from that, the process of preparing the graphics takes more time than the process in Adobe Illustrator and CorelDraw. Also, the effects and filters available don’t have a preview which is pretty annoying because I have to try them one by one to find the best for my work.

PROS: It’s a great alternative to one of today’s most popular and widely used commercial graphics software, Adobe. The best thing is that you don’t have to pay a penny to use this app. It’s available for free with all the tools in other paid software needed to create vectors and edit or enhance images. It offers features for creating and manipulating objects, plotting tools, filling tools, text support, a lot of shapes, transparency effects, paths, marker, gradients, groups, transformations, and so much more. And compared to Adobe, it’s much simpler to use.

CONS: I had some issues with the standard colors available but I already found a solution. I just look for complements in the network like the Pantone palette. Other than that, everything is good. Inkspace is an incredible and awesome platform.

PROS: It’s a great alternative to pricey vector graphics editors available in the market today. Its design is pretty simple and clean and it does not consume much storage space. On top of that, it is licensed and free under the GNU GPL. You will be able to get your project done without paying a hefty price for the software. And unlike the giants in the market, this tool is pretty easy to use. For beginners, there are a number of resources and tutorials for free that can help you get started. The vendor offers an official learning guide but you can also find tutorials on YouTube. There’s a huge self-help open source community so you won’t have any problems finding answers to your questions.

CONS: I am always looking forward to new features but unfortunately, the vendor rarely introduces new functionalities. But they do update the product on a constant basis but mainly to fix bugs and security problems. Also, its interface looks a bit outdated. It would just be cool if they make it more visually appealing. Nevertheless, it still functions well. And since it is an open-source solution and has great compatibility, we are able to find a skin to customize it on the net.
