PROS & CONS

What are the best aspects of this product?

Project is widely used to track projects of different sizes. I like the dependency chaining feature which helps to visualize task and resource scheduling. The app is great for tracking milestones at a high level and for assigning resources to particular tasks. Microsoft Project is a great fit if you use a waterfall model.

What aspects are problematic or could work better?

Microsoft Project is not ideal for agile development. To track tasks at a line item level, you can easily use a simple tool like Excel. Though Excel lacks the flexibility of MS Project, you can get the work done easily. Another drawback is if it is not used properly, MS Project can actually affect a project manager’s ability to track a project effectively. Some people overuse the app but do not gain too much for their efforts.

What specific problems in your company were solved by this product?

We use MS Project for resource planning and to track large scale projects. There are a lot of benefits such as the quick visualization and being able to monitor the pulse of a project. Plus, I can drill down and view the details behind all the tasks that need to be done.
