Overview of Microsoft Project Benefits

Arguably one of the best among the currently available project management tools, Microsoft Project is the tool for any company that is tired of trying to boost productivity with whiteboard scribblings, post-it notes, as well as scraps of paper.

The tool deals with complexity in a very simple manner. While the tool has an impressively huge range of capabilities, it is relatively easy for any user to get it to do exactly what he or she needs.

Full visibility

The software lends to you full visibility even if you are handling multiple projects. It features familiar scheduling tools like Gantt charts and prepopulated pulldown menus to speed up and simplify the project planning stage. Likewise, its multiple timelines allow you to get the big picture across projects and tasks and their progress towards milestones. Each timeline can be assigned to specific data and shared with project stakeholders. And with access from various desktop and mobile devices, you can quickly view project data anywhere you are connected to the system.

Great integration

It connects to a wide range of Microsoft software products. It leverages Skype to enhance project communication, and works with Office.com and Office 365 to work with a slew of popular Microsoft apps like Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Likewise, Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management works with Power BI Pro to lend to your project high-level business intelligence analytics.

Ready to use

You get to use built-in templates that are also customizable to your specs, a great way to get the project up and running fast. Moreover, the templates are the product of best practices, so there is no need to reinvent the wheel. You also get out-of-the-box reports that you can share with your teams. Reports like burndown charts, financials and Gantt charts are available and can be viewed across devices.

PROS: I love Project's Gantt Chart functionality, which is very excellent to say the least. Viewing tasks in either parallel or in-series is no hassle too.

CONS: The date management is poor. I find it hard to undo unwanted changes. One time I changed the due date of a certain tasks, the dates of other tasks connected to it were automatically updated.

PROS: There are lot of things you can do with MPPM tool. It offers IRR, integration with MS TFS, complete control over the breakdown structure, includes Gantt chart and it allows you to plan a project within few minutes. I also like that it displays the information in old fashion.

CONS: I’m not satisfied with resource management, there are other products that offer better. Also, if other users want to open any project files they need to install this software. And you’re going to need some training so you can use all the functions of this product.

PROS: I like the ability to customize the look, and to format the display so I can easily follow when dealing with team members. I’m allowed to add custom columns, to filter and sort tasks, to keep track of the meetings in the notes for every task, to sort and filter out closed items and to consider the upcoming tasks.

CONS: It can be demanding when entering duration, work percent complete and resources. The trouble is that if you don’t do it right it overwrites the other fields and sometimes I don’t know what’s going on at the moment and later it is difficult to recover.

PROS: Microsot Project presents businesses with a friendly and comfortable way to manage projects, particularly those modeled on linear workflows and dependencies. The software really helps you meet deadlines and more.

CONS: It is not well integrated and is best for project managers and personnel who operate in the higher lever or managment level planning of work. It can be a total wast of time if you do not know what you are doing. Better if you opt for a system that combines integrated project planning, timetracking, issues and tickets.

PROS: Microsoft Project is a smart and user-friendly software that offers a lot of functionalities. I can easily see my the availability of my resources, work schedule, skill set, etc. I can look up an activity's start and end date, as well as the steps taken by the predecessor and the successor. Mapping relationships between activities is also a breeze. I can easily calculate critical path and slack.

CONS: As much as I love the software, Microsoft Project tends to crash more often than not. It is not an ideal system for complicated projects. I also find uloading timesheets of resources into the software quite complicated.

PROS: Project is widely used to track projects of different sizes. I like the dependency chaining feature which helps to visualize task and resource scheduling. The app is great for tracking milestones at a high level and for assigning resources to particular tasks. Microsoft Project is a great fit if you use a waterfall model.

CONS: Microsoft Project is not ideal for agile development. To track tasks at a line item level, you can easily use a simple tool like Excel. Though Excel lacks the flexibility of MS Project, you can get the work done easily. Another drawback is if it is not used properly, MS Project can actually affect a project manager’s ability to track a project effectively. Some people overuse the app but do not gain too much for their efforts.
