What is NAKIVO?

NAKIVO is one of today’s leading SaaS data management & protection services for small, medium, and large businesses. The popular VM backup, replication, and recovery solution for VMware, Hyper-V, and AWS on Windows, Linux, and NAS is currently applied by some of world’s leading enterprises in different niches, including Coca Cola, FujiFilm, Calzedonia, HONDA, and many more.

At the same time, NAKIVO is a loyal partner of many managed services, cloud, and hosting providers that helps them extend their services to VM Backup-as-a-Service (BaaS), Replication-as-a-Service (RaaS), and Disaster Recovery-as-a-Service (DRaaS) for VMware virtualized environments. Pricing is flexible, and depends foremost on the rental conditions and acquired multi-tenancy and self-service features. The customer also gets to build up a unique package that caters to his needs, due to the availability of different modules and functionalities.

Once installed, NAKIVO integrates seamlessly into any software environment, and enhances data protection level in a variety of ways that save businesses time and money. In short, it swaps data exclusion, reduces backup size, and employs deduplication and compression, so that you can save expensive and production-needed space, and reduce management overhead. Fast disaster recovery is also an important component of this system that helps return your virtual infrastructure to a fully operational state without considerable interruptions, regardless of the problem you’re facing. At the moment, NAKIVO is available in English, German, Italian, Spanish, and French.

Overview of NAKIVO Benefits

Currently, this reliable and affordable data protection solution for VMware, Hyper-V, and cloud environments is used by more than 10,000 companies and 140 hosting, managed, and cloud services providers. It has also built a number of valuable partnerships in the industry to highlight its role as a DRaaS provider, and to ensure global presence in as many as 117 countries worldwide. What are the features and benefits that make NAKIVO a desired addition to any data protection suite? Let’s check:

Effective backup

NAKIVO enhances VMWare Backup performance, improves backup reliability, and speeds up recovery, which are the three vital storage practices that save businesses time and money. Windows and Linux users can deploy it in as much as 1 minute, create a 4-in-1 backup appliance by installing it on QNAP, Synology, ASUSTOR, or WD NAS, and switch to the LAN-free data transfer mode to speed up their network. NAKIVO automatically tests the effectiveness your backup strategies, and truncates application transaction logs of Microsoft Exchange and SQL. This means that you will be able to instantly recover entire VMs, files, Microsoft Exchange, SQL Server, and Active Directory objects.

NAKIVO is also a Hyper-V Backup solution that provides a variety of recovery options. Its built-in Backup & Replication features will further reduce backup time, support large and distributed environments so it can easily scale out with your business both in one datacenter and across multiple, geographically distributed locations. In this regard, NAKIVO enables instant file and Exchange and SQL object recovery, full VM recovery to the same or a new host (with copies saved also offsite and on Azure/AWS clouds), and up to 1,000 GFS recovery points per VM backup.

AWS EC2 Instance Backup is also a part of the package, for those users interested in forever-incremental backups. In such cases, NAKIVO transfers only changed data to your backup repository, be that the repository is located in the same Amazon EC2 region, or a completely different region. Another way in which NAKIVO safeguards your sensitive business data is by sending entire VM backup copies to cloud services alike Azure. This gives you the peace of mind that you will always be able to secure extra storage space, regardless of the volume of your repository.

Effective replication

NAKIVO specializes also in VMware, Hyper-V, and EC2 instance replication, where its role is to create and maintain an identical copy of a source VM, and EC2 on a target ESXi host, and Hyper-Vs on a targeted host. In such way, it minimizes the risk of data loss and the length of downtime, and it powers up your resources rather than consuming them. With time, such practices will exhibit a positive effect on recovery point objectives (RPOs) and recovery time objectives (RTOs), and return data seamlessly to your normal business operations. NAKIVO’s AKIVO Backup & Replication  also provides the Application-Aware mode, which ensures that the data in replicated VMs running applications and databases such as Exchange, Active Directory, SQL, are consistent.

Instant disaster recovery

NAKIVO helps restore your original virtual infrastructure and take it back to its normal and fully operational state, minimizing at the same time all unwanted effects of the intrruptions. VM Replication is one of the most influential ways to achieve that, as it cuts dramatically both the time and the resources needed to get your system up and running. NAKIVO does that by helping you add individual VMs and VMware containers (resource pools, folders, hosts, clusters) to a replication job, and make sure all important files have usable copies. To return your workloads back to their primary site, NAKIVO will also replicate your VMs back to the production site by simply powering the new replicas to take over the role of the source VMs.

Since each company has specific business wants, it is sensible for them to abstain from searching for a one-size-fits-all faultless software application. Needless to say, it would be futile to try to find such a system even among popular software applications. Pros: Easy to use web interface is a big plus for backup solution, especially when you have multiple customers that want to have overview of their backup infra, so multitenancy is the right way to go. Great plus is the possibility to backup VMs on free ESXi and also on latest version 6.7 that we tested successfully. This was a No-Go while using Veeam B&R. API is very usefull if you want to automate backup creation, so in the end you can create or recover VM in one single command. We also like the notifications, compression, deduplication options and network acceleration to speed up backup/restore operations through slower WAN connections. The price is much better in compare to other backup alternatives and each of Nakivo backup component uses very small HW resources, but that depends on your configuration. Install and upgrade process is straightforward and very fast, so in about 15min you are ready to go. Good job to Nakivo.

Cons: I cannot think of any right now, only time will show.

Pros: Incredibly easy to setup and run. The interface is web based and easy to use. The ability to run this software on a Synology NAS really sets it apart from other solutions.

Cons: I would like to see hyper-v snapshots remain intact after a backups run.
