What is TaxCloud?

TaxCloud is a free, web-hosted sales tax management and compliance solution that aims to simplify the management of internet sales. Used by online retailers and wholesalers across the US, it is equipped with a slew of tools that can calculate taxes, maintain compliance, and simplify the collection of sales tax from customers. TaxCloud also offers a tax platform that helps users automatically track sales tax rates, and product-type and use-based tax exemptions in every state. Also, the online sales tax management solution enables them to easily calculate and collect sales taxes, as well as, comply with sales tax laws.

Additionally, TaxCloud supports integration with more than 85 eCommerce platforms. Furthermore, it offers public sales tax APIs that users can quickly implement for their shopping cart, order management, and ERP systems. Its set of APIs can also be used by any hosted marketplace so online retailers can adhere to any sales tax laws implemented in the United States. Last but not the least, TaxCloud generates monthly reports wherein users can drill down to tax jurisdictions by state, country, or city.

Overview of TaxCloud Benefits

TaxCloud lets online retail businesses manage their sales taxes without the need of hiring a team of tax attorneys and software developers, or invest on expensive tax compliance platforms. Through the aid of its core public sales tax APIs, users will be able to calculate accurate sales taxes for addresses in the United States. These APIs also  enable them to keep up with product-type and use-based exemption rules in any state.

TaxCloud offers 5 main or core public sales tax APIs that users can rapidly implement for their systems to perform specific functions: Ping, Address Verification, Tax Amount Lookup, Order Completion, and Merchandise Returns. Once they enable these APIs, their systems will work with TaxCloud, allowing them to manage their sales taxes quickly and accurately.

To understand how these 5 core APIs work, the following discussions provide an overview of TaxCloud’s core APIs. TaxCloud offers a public sales tax API that allows users to verify the addresses of their customers. This API is called VerifyAdress API. The purpose of this API is to help users identify tax jurisdictions accurately. Once a customer’s address is verified, the correct sales tax can be applied.

Another core API offered by TaxCloud is its Lookup API. This API is used to calculate the appropriate sales taxes for the items that customers are purchasing. It calculates the sales tax amount due for each item based on the customer’s address that has been verified using the VerifyAddress API.

Meanwhile, TaxCloud has a set of  APIs that allows the platform to determine purchases that have been completed and to capture information from these completed purchases, enabling users to prepare their sales tax reports and tax returns. This set of APIs is referred to as Authorized and Captured APIs. The Authorized API is used so TaxCloud can instantly know that a customer has completed the purchase and the sales tax amount due for such purchase has already been collected by the store. In preparing sales tax reports and tax returns, the platform requires the use of its Captured API.

TaxCloud also provides users with an API that helps them manage sales taxes for orders that have been cancelled, modified, or returned. Through the aid of its Returned API, the eCommerce platform or online store that implements this API sends alerts to TaxCloud. As a result, TaxCloud can update its transaction record when an order is cancelled, modified, or returned after a completed purchase or transaction.

Interestingly, TaxCloud offers an API that ensures users that their system or platform is communicating smoothly with TaxCloud. By using its Ping API, they will be able to check if their platform, system, or website is implementing TaxCloud’s APIs properly. Additionally, the platform also has advanced APIs that help them easily and quickly manage exemption certificates, obtain Taxability Information Codes (TICs), add a batch of transactions from offline sources, and other capabilities.

On top of its public sales tax APIs, TaxCloud offers an Automated Compliance service for free. This is because the states are the ones paying TaxCloud for managing the sales taxes of its customers. With its free tax compliance service; users will be able to calculate sales taxes for every address in the United States, track exemptions rules in every state, and obtain tax reports they can use in filing their sales tax returns. However, TaxCloud charges a monthly service fee for users who prefer not to use its free Automated Compliance service and want to manually manage their sales taxes on their own.

The intelligent thing to do would be to customize the application for your special wants, staff member skill levels, budget, and other elements. For these reasons, do not rush and pay for well-publicized trendy solutions. Though these may be widely used, they may not be the perfect fit for your unique wants. Do your research, look into each short-listed system in detail, read a few TaxCloud reviews, contact the maker for explanations, and finally choose the product that provides what you need.

Pros: You can set it up so that the states pay for it. It was free for me.

Cons: The new site is cool but sometimes it doesn't work with the browser I use (IE).

Pros: The product appears to work fine (API calls to get tax info)

Cons: Billing is problematic and customer service is horrible...you can call and will never receive a call back (and of course no one is ever available). You can use the online customer service portal to ask a question and they don't appear to respond to that either. If there is a comparable alternative...use it!
