Altaro VM Backup Review

PROS: 1. Easy to Use. 2. User Friendly Interface. 3. Good Tech support.

CONS: 1. Error Messages should be made a little more user friendly.

PROS: The Pricing is the best I have seen in any backup solution. I have been with this product for years and have watched it grow.I believe it has caught up to Veeam in speed and now it also has Replication. Although I have not used that as of yet. I do work with both products too. I think the interface is clean and simple to use. But by far the best feature of this product is the support. With an instant chat client built in you can simply click on it and get connected with support. Never seen a product better supported than Altaro. And the Offsite copies to Microsoft Azure work great. Cheap Offsite backups. I don't think Veeam supports that yet with out a dedicated Server in Azure.

CONS: There is only one feature that I believe they are missing. When you need to restore a file it puts the restored date on the file, not the original. There are times when you want something retored and you want the original date on the file. I have discovered a work around for it. With the premium version that supports booting of the backup, all you have to do is boot the backup and shut it down. There is an iscsi connection to a VHDX file I believe. Mount it and restore the files you need. It will have the original date on the files.

PROS: Easy to use without any training, diverse functions for small business.

CONS: None

PROS: Instant Restore (Boot from Backup), allows us to have a client running in minutes after a VM Failure. Ease of restore testing... automated and verifiable Simple Tracking, the status of all of our clients clearly visible at a glance.

CONS: No Physical Machine backup solution yet (although I have been informed by support that this is on the timeline)

PROS: live chat help is built into the product in case you get stuck, The Ability to backup locall Lan and then again directly offsite

CONS: Better estimated times for 1) backup 2) recovery

PROS: The ability to also do offsite with install of the offsite client software.

CONS: host connection and machine type compatibility.

PROS: Really great backup tool that we use for numerous Hyper-V hosts. Well priced, and there is even a free edition for installations with only 2 VMs. Once you get into the paradigm of how the interface works, it is pretty easy to navigate. Have restored numerous files using this.

CONS: Once when we had 2 target backup drives we didn't realise had the same exact drive signature (they had previously been in a RAID mirror) it only ever made one as an available backup location. Would be great if it detected this very rare case and let us know.

PROS: Price: The price of Altaro is very competitive when looking at all solutions for Hyper v backup Altaro was one of the cheapest solutions with the features our company needed.

CONS: The only problem I have come across so far was a corrupt backup but Altaro health check picked up on this and the problem was rectified.

PROS: Quick, easy setup process. I had reviewed many options prior to going with Altaro and none even came close. I have had this running in several locations over the years and have never had a problem with backing up or restoring data. We have had to do complete disaster recovery at one of our locations due to a fire and it went so easily that i felt like I missed something when in fact it just went smoothly.

CONS: I haven't had any issues that would fall under this question.

PROS: This is great program for backing up files. I’m able to backup hyper-v 2012 R2 guests to USB and WAN to remote a site. There were no problems with the software. It is easy to use and easy to set it up. It provides clear interface and reports. I haven’t faced any bugs. It support team is quickly and you can reach them either on website or LiveChat.

CONS: The reports lack details about transfer speed, size of the file that is transferring or about ETA. I like that this tool is simple but I really need some more information on the interface. Also, it would be great if they could make the schedules and locations more flexible.

PROS: Easy integration with Hyper-V. Allows for simple offsite backup and options for offsite to Azure. Customer support is quick via chat and always very helpful. Features for backup verification and assessment of overall backup health. Nice dedup features and even continuous data protection (high frequency backup schedule) Price is considerably less than similar competitor products. An upgrade is relatively smooth but requires re-install of software.

CONS: Software is updated probably twice a year and requires re-install to take advantage of new features.

PROS: Every time I use Altaro it works and that is the most important aspect. It's easy to use and doesn't seem to crash.

CONS: I've had some problems with backups of hyper-v's on server 2016 it's inconsistent but they were not able to fix the issue for me.

PROS: Altaro provides a quick an easy VM backup solution without a lot of resource overhead or extensive training.

CONS: Upon occasion, I would have the service not connect (Server 2008 R2) and would have to restart it manually to allow the backup engine to function. It was not a frequent issue but could have been problematic under the right circumstances. Having since migrated to Server 2016 a couple of months go, I have yet to experience this issue.

PROS: Altaro's Software offers the whole copy of every VM and all data. Its interface is user-friendly and the setup doesn’t take so much time. We have been using this software for more than 2 years and we have experienced few issues with this product. We were able to do more than 10 restores over the years and each one was successful.

CONS: I would like to see an integration with some cloud services for storage offsite. Also, sometimes we have to delete the backup of the server because it stops with the backing up. It would be great if they could include ISCSI drives in the backup.

PROS: Price and Quality. Very easy to use. You can use the Tool on every pc you want.

CONS: It would be nice that you can use the tool also when u are restoring.

PROS: The feature set for what you can do with your backups to bring your system back online, including spinning up directly from the backup while a restore is in progress. Restoring right down to the file level is a very good feature.

CONS: In some ways, the UI is over simplistic by having to wade through multiple screens to achieve something. I can understand the need for it but for more advanced users sometimes having all the settings on one screen to perform a task is better.

PROS: For one price you can backup unlimited VM's on a single host. Very useful for us. The product is extremely easy to setup and get working right away. It makes getting your systems setup for backup quick and easy so you can focus on specific scenarios or custom backup plans after you know you have the basics covered.

CONS: I have had issues with the remote tools for Altaro. Support has been helpful with this when it's happened but I would really love to see that process smoothed out. We generally monitor and manage our backups from remote workstations . We would prefer not to have to logon to the server just to to do monitoring and maintenance.

PROS: Powerfull and easy to use. Very good innovative additions over time like CDP and others.

CONS: The management of backups (and the backup space) could be better.

PROS: Administration very easy, easy to implement, easy to use

CONS: After failure no further warning

PROS: Die Lösung ist sehr einfach zu installieren. Innerhalb weniger Minuten erzielt man eine funktionsfähige Backup und Restore Lösung. Die Integration in HYPERV ab 2012R2 bis 2016 ist einwandfrei. Bei 2019 schlägt man sich mit den OS Baustellen rum. Server 2008R2 funktioniert auch. Einige Bonbons können nicht genutzt werden.

CONS: Backup und Offsite Backup funktionieren auf CIFS basis einwandfrei. Sicherung auf Tape geht nur von "Hinten durch die Brust ins Auge."

PROS: The software is super intuitive and easy to use, very easy to update and manage, and the support that Altaro provides is top notch. You will be hard-pressed to find another company with support like they offer. Anytime you need assistance, you're immediately connected with someone who actually works for Altaro and knows the product, and if you need them to remote to your server, they have a built-in TeamViewer client that you can activate on-demand.

CONS: My only gripe with the product is that it can't backup our vCenter server appliance (because their software connects through vCenter instead of directly connecting to each of your hosts individually).

PROS: Very easy to use backup software for the Hyper-V environment that we use, and support is very knowledgable.

CONS: Cannot really think of any negative comments

PROS: faster than veeam esayer than veem it is esay and fast to install and i have every time an completly overview of the importend things

PROS: There are many backup options, but not many have as robust test and verify tools.

CONS: Tracking crash-consistent vs application-consistent backups across time on a VM

PROS: Easy to use, fast, I can trust it to keep my files

CONS: When backup fail, it won't retry till next session

PROS: Easy to setup and configure all VMs to a local and cloud locations.

CONS: Have not noticed any real problems yet.

CONS: -When a Backup Faild no retry

PROS: Easy to install, configure, and maintain. Offsite backups are generally very reliable as well. Any problems we have had with offsite copies have been network related.

CONS: More detailed error reporting and online help to make it easier to resolve issues on our own.

PROS: you can try and use it free (2 VMs) good user interface

CONS: if you have more than one host, it's not easy to integrate it in the active directory and to use one share

PROS: I installed it and it has been running ever since. Simple and straightforward. I did do some shopping prior to purchasing Altaro and the price compared to other VM backup software was the best

CONS: None

PROS: Gets installed and configured on the fly. First Backup after less than 10 Minutes. Easy to use, Build in chat support

CONS: Can´t report any severe problem

PROS: The software is so easy to use. I have very little knowledge of backup systems. I downloaded the Altaro backup software and licenses, and was able to install, license and backup VMs in no time. Restoring was also very simple once I got past a Microsoft issue which the support team was able to walk me through quickly.

PROS: Easy to download and setup - free version for trialing.

CONS: Reporting is a little fiddly (and doesn't work in my version of EDGE) - but if you use CHROME you are good to go.

PROS: Its a light backup agent, easy to understand GUI.

CONS: none

PROS: This backup solution allows me to manage all the backups for multiple VM Host servers at the same time. It allows me to setup templates for backup schedules as well as individualize settings as needed.

CONS: Occasionally, I have run into the issue where a backup fails and the error messages are sometimes generalized and don't point you to the issue without contacting support.

PROS: I certainly like the fact that I can trust Altaro to consistently handle backups and the space available.

CONS: The error reporting at times can be quite vague

PROS: able to sleep sound knowing our systems are backed up and that the online customer support team is ready to field any questions with the product that may arise

CONS: nothing at the moment

PROS: Great feature set that works well with granular and offsite transfer requirements.

CONS: Had one restore that did not work as described but support team worked with me to find a work around.

PROS: Software is inexpensive and does what it claims. Saves lots of disk space with compression and deduplication. They also offered me a $15 Amazon gift card for this review, so that's nice of them, shilling for good reviews.

CONS: Change Bit Tracking will kill VM performance, turn this off. It will make your VMs that can do 5GB/s (yes, gigabytes) writes max out at 5MB/s. They added an option in the GUI to do this now. Do not turn on concurrency, or you will have issues.

PROS: I was frustrated by the competition putting one feature I wanted with a whole set of others I didn’t need at a premium. But with Altaro I get exactly the features I want at just the right price. The feature set for the price is unbeatable in my opinion.

CONS: The data transfer goes across the interface you add the machine on. If you add hosts via vCenter this means the primary management interface. The systems gives a lot of control as to how backups are stored, scheduled, and retained, but it takes quite a few clicks to setup a backup because of it.

PROS: -On line dashboard to receive info on all backups of everylocations in one place instead of filtering thru tons of emails -Great compression of files -Multiple possibilities of backup locations for both on site and offsite backups -Offers great features such as backup verifications, boot from backup -Can either recover the full VM, a few files, exchange items, or simply one virtual hard disk -Works great for both VMWARE and HYPER-V

CONS: There is no password protection on the software itself, so if the server is left unattended and unlocked or if a brute force attack goes thru the windows security the backups are at risk.
