Autodesk 3ds Max Review

Autodesk 3ds Max
Our score: 8.9 User satisfaction: 98%

What is Autodesk 3ds Max?

3ds Max is a 3D modeling, animation, and rendering software built and developed for games and design visualization. The program is included in the collection of media and entertainment software products offered by Autodesk. It is also a part of Autodesk’s architecture, engineering, and construction collection, and one of the tools in product design and manufacuring collection. 3ds Max is used by visual effects artists and professionals in film and TV industries and by game developers and designers for the creation of virtual reality games. The software is also very useful for building design, infrastructure, and construction, as well as, for product development and manufacturing planning.

Furthermore, 3ds Max helps users create massive game worlds, produce detailed characters, and customize building environments. They will be able to animate individual characters and make scenes that contain many people. The software allows them to simulate the physical properties of liquids like water, oil, and lava. In addition, 3ds Max has animation controllers that users can create, modify, and share.

The software also has 3D rendering features such as the capability to simulate real-life camera settings. Additionally, it offers an asset library which enables users to easily search for 3D content. 3ds Max also provides features for 3D modeling, texturing, and effects. Thanks to it, users will be able to create and animate geometry in various ways, as well, apply surface and mesh modeling.

Overview of Autodesk 3ds Max Benefits

3ds Max offers users various ways to create animations. It also provides robust tools that help them manage and edit their animations. They will be able to create 3D computer animations and effects that they can apply to computer games, films and broadcasts, medical illustrations, or forensic presentations.

The software has multiple animation controllers. These are used to store animation key values and procedural animation settings, handling everything that users animate through the software. Also, as they animate characters, mechanical assemblies, or complex motions, 3ds Max enables them to link objects together. As a result, they will be able to form hierarchies or chains. With these hierarchies, they can animate sets of objects at once, simplifying the animation process.

In addition, 3ds Max provides 3D rendering features, and one of them is the capability to preview the rendering. By activating the ActiveShade Mode within the software, users will be able to see the effects when they change the lighting and materials in a scene. As they adjust the lighting and materials of their scene, a window will display the changes and interactively update the rendering.

3ds Max also has a workflow feature which allows users to convert scenes so the lights, materials, and objects within them can be changed to those ones used by the most advanced rendering technologies.  Because of this, they will be able to apply numerous renderer features such as new physical materials and environments, and accurate settings. In addition, they will be able to convert lights, materials, and objects between render engines with flexibility, providing them with the option to convert only the ones they need.

Summing up, 3ds Max has a dialog tool called Material Editor that allows users to create and edit materials and maps in their scenes. They will be able to apply creative textures, as well as,  simulate refractions, reflections, and other effects as they assign materials to objects.

PROS: 3DS Max does everything you can ever imagine within 3D realm. I’m using this product for more than 7 years and thanks to this tool I’m an expert in modeling anything I can think of. It allows me to handle scenes with more than 50 million polygons and there is always room when it comes to renderers. The good thing is that this software offers lot of choices for basic renderer to programs like Corona and V-ray.

CONS: It has minor issue or bug as you will within the settings tab and when adjusting the light cache when the tab is pressed the entire program freezes. Unfortunately, I have experienced this kind of issue often, when Max crashes.

PROS: It offers great set of features, and the product is very customizable. I like the ray rendering of materials because it makes things to look more realistic. I personaly like the tool with axes for adjusting components in controlled manner.

CONS: It takes some time for rendering, and often times we have to test scenes few times so we can get the desired output. And I don’t like that it has too many buttons and this means that there are lot of clickings required. Also, I don’t like the interface because it has lot of commands that take more screen space unnecessary.

PROS: The program is flexible and it offers huge potential. It allows us to make almost everything from images to live-videos. There are lot of tutorials online, especially their official ones. I like that they constantly update the program and the team does everything to satisfied their customer’s needs. There is always room for improvements and they are on the right path.

CONS: In my opinion, the UI is not sensible, not comfortable. Also, I don’t like its built-in render engines so I have to purchase other render engines like V-ray or Corona Renderer.

There are lot of shortcuts which is great thing for professionals, and for beginners there are tutorials, icons and short videos that explain how this software works. I like that it has unique ways of rendering, animating, modeling and texturing and it offers support for third party plugins.

CONS: It is buggy and it crashes from time to time and there are no huge changes into the new versions just few features. Also, the old version doesn’t recognize files saved on new version.

PROS: 3Ds Max offers great set of tools and features, its UI is intuitive and clear. You won’t have any troubles if you are familiar with Autocad already. The product is stable and it works perfectly without crashing. It has great built-in tools and the good thing is that you can always expand them with Pletora of free or commercial add-ons. I like that there is internal scripting language and this means that you can even write your own tools, which is great thing. Furthermore, if you are an architect then this software is perfect solution for your career. We can easily modify materials and apply them with its built-in texturing options.

CONS: Some add-ons or physical simulation features may cause stability issues. Also, some of its animation tools are not intuitive. In addition, there are features that no one uses so It would be great if we could delete them from the program so it can run faster. Furthermore, if you work with 4k screen then the interface is not displayed correctly so you have to use 2017 release.

Also, I like that modeling methodology is straightforward. IN fact, this is perfect solution for architectural visualizatons.

CONS: When it comes to creating characters into 3Ds max is not as that simple because it limits creativity. Also, it is buggy and it lacks parametric modeling features. In addition, the integrating REVIT models into 3Ds max can be cumbersome because it makes difficult to connect the files and keep the link for long period of time. Furthermore, the autosave features freezes the program for 10 minutes.
