What is Google App Engine?

Google App Engine is a cloud-based computing service developed to host web applications in existing Google infrastructure. It is offered as a Platform as a Service (PaaS) product that gives Web app developers and enterprises access to Google’s scalable hosting and tier 1 Internet service. Google App Engine boasts scalability and easy management as well as free use of predefined consumed resources, and comes with Java support.

Overview of Google App Engine Benefits

With Google App Engine, users have a cloud-based platform that enables them to create, maintain, and scale apps without the need to have and/or maintain servers. Once the application is uploaded, it is ready for deployment. Scaling is also automatic and the process depends mostly on incoming traffic.

Google App Engine offers support for a host of programming languages. The service also supports both standard and flexible environments. Users just need to pick an environment, select a language, and fire away.

PROS: GAE provides simple configuration for autoscaling and easy integration with mobile app to the REST API servers. There is minimal administration required. I can easily execute asynchronous tasks and I don’t need to handle queues. The push queue and the platform take care of execution along with scaling up when needed. I use Mem-cached for fast data access.

CONS: Limitations when using the Appengine with JAVA like reflection and threading, it is difficult to include other 3rd party libraries and to debug into local environment by using Datastore option. Also, the price of datastore affects the coding style when trying to optimize on cost.

PROS: GAE is powerful data storage tool, it is fast and easy to set up, allows you to start quickly with its apps. Also, the quirks and constrains of GAE are well-documented. By using this product you can easily develop and deploy all of your applications. Everything is well defined and you will be provided with accurate instructions as to how the app will perform and behave, for e.g. the asynchronous tasks.

CONS: Some basic mechanisms are not available, one of them is the inability to write to file system. The data store meets all needs but there is no option to dump things directly into files and this means that all once-common tasks need to be rethought.

PROS: By using Google App engine I can easily develop web app in Python. Great console. Google App Launcher tool and development servers are intuitive and easy to set up. This AppEngine offers great documentation for the platform. We can easily integrate the platform with other Google Apps like emails, calendar and other features.

CONS: The price is good but the platform itself has some complexity when it comes to understanding of the breakdown usage. Google constantly changes the libraries and deprecates features. It would be difficult to move to another service because we are so connected with AppEngine features and options. For small sized companies the Google support is limited.

PROS: Great tool for using PaaS offers, you are allowed to use other Google Compute IaaS services. When using AppEngine you have lots of other service bindings directly from Google and third parties. Simple and powerful autoscalling, and great customizable scaling functions available. There are great integrations with Eclipse and InteliJ, and great documented CLI’s. Provides effective admin console.

CONS: There are limitations if you want to manage VM and JVM settings, if you use 3rd party code you will have some difficulties when it comes to file access. They need to work more on JRE and Log4J. They modified the libraries and access to services and now there can’t be found portable app codes.

PROS: What I really love about Appengine is its rapid development, you can develop an app and deploy it to production in less time, and you don’t need to have knowledge in infrastructure or setup. You don’t need complex platform for tuning and installation because you have simple locally development and deployment. You can even autoscale app so you can deal with other high demand by using Admin interface and you are even able to define the deadlines for service requests. Data persistence is straightforward especially with NoSQL datastore, and this is great for app that are not heavy for transaction, but if you have some heavy transactions you can always integrate with Cloud SQL. When using AppEngine you can enjoy its services starting from identity management to integration with many other Google APIs. You can use it from Mobile app and you can easily develop app Engine as a mobile backend without any problem.

CONS: I need to tell that some of JAVA functions are not available such as file access and this means that you need Cloud Storage to store your files instead of processing them directly on the server. Also, heavyweight java stick can be slow or even might not run. The Spring Framework is slow and you cannot even use the Hibernate framework. Before you start check whether the library plays well with AppEngine or not. You will need to spend some time to tune the app so you can reach optimal setup. Before you start with AppEngine do thorough research on what works well with AppEngine so you can use the software with all its benefits with less frustrations.

PROS: With GAE you can effortlessly run the cloud based system. It provides great support for numerous program languages, and great documentation tool for what you can do directly in the framework. To store data in NoSQL format is very beneficial even though it can be very complex during the design. And this is extremely helpful when it comes to quick queries and this depends on your requirements.

CONS: It can be a little difficult if you want to perform queries on your data and this is due to how all the data is stored and even organized. I feel that Google can do something to improve these issues and will make the process of querying data more intuitive. My advice is before you start with GAE research about its limitations because this may affect your work.

PROS: You can easily start using AppEngine thanks to its powerful and simple scalable software. You don’t need to require scalability because you can still deploy, create and manage all your cloud based systems without problem. AppEngine platform is under Google and it so easy to manage that all you need to do is to write the core software and you can spend your time on solving issues and when you deploy the app leave everything else to Google, it will take care of running, monitoring and even scaling the software. You don’t need to manage everything and all day-to-day operations. The cloud datastore is integrated with AppEngine, it is simple and it is a NoSQL datastore, you can use it without any problem and I believe you will be satisfied especially with this integration because it provides great performances. When using the AppEngine you can choose from various languages including Java and Python. It is easy to use Python program in AppEngine.

CONS: Something that I don’t like is the fact that if you need something that it is not included in tunable parameters you cannot do anything about that even though Google provides excellent system that is functional in 90% of cases. The price for datastore is expensive, and costs 0.18$ per GB and that is 9x the cost of other Google’s storage options. If you need to program the datastore it can be tricky when it comes to AppEngine development because it has some limitations.

PROS: First things first, it is Google’s. AppEngine provides great and powerful stability and scaling, you don’t need to hire someone to monitor the site even when there is a lot of traffic. It has great renovated designs and intuitive dashboards. It offers fast speed and you are able to give suggestions. Great documentation option and multitasking and memcache integrations.

CONS: The task queue might not work in this cloud software. They need to work on their Log system and Datastore Query. The tickets rising and resolve are very slow and there are so many questions if you want to check details on the shared things. We need more library and jars options.

PROS: AppEngine allows you to get web-based app and products directly into production, you are able to use and choose from many software languages, I’m using Python. The good thing is that this platform eliminates lot of infrastructure work such as installing and maintaining machines, databases, web-services, high availability, load-balancing and many other. This platform offers unlimited scalability and reliability, you have an option to try the product for free. There are constant improvements and new features, and fixes. With this platform you can deploy app into private corporate clouds.

CONS: Integration with some google products is not possible. I need to see improvements when it comes to documentation of complex usage because sometimes it is missing or it is outdated. Hybrid architecture is needed when working with heavy files. It can be costly to switch to another solution when it comes to re-design.

PROS: This Google App Engine is very intuitive admin console where from one cloud you are able to manage other applications. I’m using it for hosting a web app for my business. This platform offers great set of cloud data storage settings that can be modified the way you want. The good thing is that this App Engine supports memcaching too. I can easily maintain code thanks to git repository. The API is easy to implement and use. You can use 10GB free trial storage and this is really great for students. Great app to manage and do everything you need for maintenance of your web-based apps.

CONS: Some of the options for storage can be confusing. They need to improve the debugger console attached and resolve some issues when it comes to this function.
