What is Google Beacon Platform?
Google Beacon Platform is an initiative spearheaded by Google on the idea that beacons can be used to provide Android device users relevant information and content as they pass through certain locations. Beacons, in this context, are generally small devices that transmit one-way messages via Bluetooth to smartphones that are within its range, more or less a few meters.
From a business perspective, Google Beacon Platform takes proximity marketing to a whole new level. Using Google’s location technology, beacons deployed by Google business partners automatically detect Android mobile device users (and iOS as well) who are in proximity to their location, generally a few meters. The beacons then notify the mobile users of their promotions, products, services, offerings, and other content.
Google Beacon Platform includes a number of sub-projects including Eddystone as well as a collection of other cloud and mobile APIs designed for beacon interaction. Currently, the technology is only limited to select businesses in the US and Europe, primarily those that use Google’s advertising services and have activated location extensions.

Enhanced Visibility
Google’s beacon technology dramatically increases the visibility of physical stores to mobile device users. One of the key goals in any marketing endeavor is to let people know your business exists and where they can find you. With Google Beacon Platform, you are telling potential customers where you are and what you offer, in real-time. Retail stores are seen as the primary users of Google’s beacon technology, there were successful implementations in other sectors like restaurants, hotels, car rentals, and even massive public transportation networks.
Data-Driven Mapping
As customers enter your store and do business, Google collects business-critical data based on their in-store positioning, such as where they sit, which section of the floor they immediately go to, how long they stay, and more.
Such data helps Google create a map of consumers’ in-store actions and attribute these actions to specific parts of your customers’ journey. You don’t only see where they sit or when they leave your store, Google helps you measure those actions and how they translate to sales.
Targeted Messaging
You can set up multiple sensors inside your store to help identify where your customers at a given time. This will not only help improve the accuracy of data, but it also ensures the accuracy of your marketing messages. For instance, John passes by a shelf of cornflakes. A beacon detects John’s mobile device and instantly sends a notification of the store’s latest discount on specific cornflake brands.
It’s Open-Source
The Google Beacon Platform rides on Google internet infrastructure and therefore uses its technology. That said, the project is open-source. That means developers from the user’s side can add features or develop custom functionalities they believe can add value to their business.
