What is Hadoop HDFS?

Hadoop HDFS is created using a distributed file system design. It operates on commodity hardware and is highly fault-tolerant and created using low-cost hardware, a far cry from other distributed platforms. The Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) functions as the main storage system used by Hadoop applications.

HDFS is a distributed file system that delivers high-performance access to data across Hadoop clusters. Like other Hadoop-related technologies, HDFS has evolved to become a critical application for handling pools of big data as well as supporting tools for big data analytics.

HDFS is capable of holding very large amount of data and gives users an easier access to them compared to other alternatives. To store such huge data, the files are placed across multiple machines. These files are stored in a redundant manner to save the system from potential data losses in case of failure. HDFS also makes applications available for parallel processing.

Because HDFS typically is implemented on low-cost commodity hardware, server failures occur every now and then. While HDFS is created to be highly fault-tolerant, the system continues to function because data is transferred rapidly between compute nodes once a node fails. The design effectively diminishes the risk of catastrophic failure, even if and when numerous nodes fail simultaneously.

When HDFS digests in data, it breaks the information down into separate pieces and delivers them to different nodes in a cluster, which allows for parallel processing. The file system also replicates each piece of data multiple times and delivers the copies to individual nodes, placing at least one copy on a different server rack than the others. This means that the data on nodes that crash can be found elsewhere within a cluster, enabling the processing to continue while the failure is resolved.
