IGEL UDC Review

What is IGEL UDC?

IGEL UDC is a radical and revolutionary thin client conversion software that transforms x-86, 64-bit endpoint devices such as PCs, laptops, tablets, and third-party thin clients into IGEL Linux-based thin clients that can be deployed universally. This desktop virtualization and endpoint management software empowers chief experience officers and IT and security professionals to give their existing and outdated hardware a new purpose instead of wasting their company’s money on costly hardware replacements or software updates, build a standardized virtual desktop infrastructure and computing environment, and implement enterprise-level security.

IGEL UDC can convert any x-86 device into IGEL OS thin client regardless of whoever manufactured such device. After the conversion process is done, the converted endpoint devices can be managed centrally from the IGEL Universal Management Suite. This suite provides remote administration, low-touch deployment, and built-in security capabilities; giving them complete control of their endpoint devices and simplifying their endpoint environment. With IGEL UDC, users will be able to extend the life of their existing assets, eliminate unnecessary IT expenditures, and scale their infrastructure so their employees can work better and deliver an excellent service.

Overview of IGEL UDC Benefits

A Hardware-Agnostic Solution Which Helps You Minimize IT Costs

One of the main benefits that companies can get from IGEL UDC is that it aids them in keeping their IT costs to a minimum. The thin client conversion software is hardware-agnostic which means it has the capability to convert any existing x-86 device into an IGEL OS powered thin client or endpoint device. By the way, a thin client is an endpoint device that is configured and optimized to connect with a server-based computing environment remotely.

The hardware-agnostic software can convert x-86 endpoint devices into IGEL thin clients regardless of their manufacturer and operating system. Once the devices are converted, they can be easily deployed on any end-user computing environment (EUC) or virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI). Therefore, users no longer need to invest in new hardware to replace their old or outdated hardware, as IGEL UDC provides them with the opportunity to reshape and repurpose their existing hardware. This way, they will be able to achieve virtualization at a lower cost, extending the life of their existing hardware and establishing a future-proof end-user computing environment.

Build A Standardized Desktop Environment

IGE UDC is a great tool for building a consistent virtual environment of desktops and operating systems. With IGEL UDC, the once mismatched fleet of PCs and operating systems are now set up and running on a universal end-user computing environment. Thus, the software can standardize an environment or infrastructure, integrating a diverse collection of desktops, endpoint devices, and operating systems. This makes the lives of IT professionals much easier, as they will be able to manage and monitor their endpoint devices effortlessly as well as gain the flexibility of a virtual desktop infrastructure.

Endpoint Management Made Easy

The thin client conversion software simplifies endpoint management. This is made possible through the aid of IGEL’s Universal Management Suite (UMS). This suite is an endpoint management system which can centralize the way users manage their endpoint devices; offering remote administration, zero-touch deployment, and security capabilities. After the hardware or endpoint devices are converted using IGEL UDC, they are automatically integrated into the suite. IGEL UMS also has an indexing feature wherein it can instantly index an endpoint device after the conversion.

Granular Customization And Configuration

IGEL UDC allows users to apply granular customizations and configurations as they manage their converted hardware or endpoint devices. They can customize the appearance of each device and even decide how it will function or perform. The software also permits them to activate or deactivate functionalities. Setting custom partitions, deploying partial updates, adjusting scalability through extensions, and enabling the switching between fat/thick clients and thin clients are all made possible as well.

Embedded Security Features

Security features are embedded into IGEL UDC. The software is using the Linux operating system which is a safe and secure operating system, effectively resisting viruses and malware and proactively guarding itself against hackers and manipulators. In addition, the software has built-in capabilities that support widely used security technologies and methods such as two-factor authentication and smart card readers. It includes a secure file system that prevents anyone from tampering, destroying, or stealing mission-critical and confidential files, documents, and data. Users can also set and modify security policies with granularity.

PROS: The OS is cheap. ~$75/license. The hardware is powerful and reasonable priced. I was able to, using their documentation, setup an ISE DACL, Management Server, and configure end-points on my own in a matter of days. The product, for the most part, works well.

CONS: Code Quality: Unfortunately I've seen basic features in 11.01.100 go from working to COMPLETELY broken in 11.01.130 and not be totally fixed by 11.02.150. This is HIGHLY problematic as the basic feature is retaining display settings when docking/undocking a laptop. Support: Until you are fully implemented there is zero reason to purchase a support contract. They won't speak to you. No matter how much money you throw at them they won't let you get past the pre-sales engineers, unless you buy advanced services (consulting time). Expertise is hit or miss on various aspects of configuration; getting timelines for resolution is like pulling teeth; responses are, may times, as if they didn't read the issue you are having. Logging: This is something that caught me totally off guard. When I asked about how to log to splunk I was told "use our API". Which, the API doesn't provide any logging functionality. Outside of that, they have no data dictionary they will provide. The endpoints themselves can syslog remotely, but the servers ONLY log to a DB so you're left either reverse engineering the data structure or paying for consulting time to come in and do this basic config.
