What is Cloudify?

Cloudify is an open source cloud orchestration platform used by development and operations teams from various organizations and enterprises to automate the process of modeling, building, deploying, and managing business applications and network services across hybrid cloud and stack environments. The platform is built based on an architecture and framework that utilizes TOSCA or Topology and Orchestration Specification for Cloud Applications, a specification that provides a standard language for describing applications, their dependencies, and the infrastructure where such applications are run. With Cloudify, software application developers will be able to rapidly model and build topologies of their applications using blueprint files that comply with the TOSCA specification.

The platform is also equipped with templates and widgets that make it easy for users to access, organize, and manipulate the data they need as they create models of application and network topologies. In addition, it has an intuitive drawing tool called Composer which allows them to easily drag and drop node components so they can build dynamic topologies that clearly specify and describe dependencies, workflows, and inputs and outputs.

Cloudify offers features that automate and streamline the governance of cloud resources, and at the same time, help users ensure that their processes comply with regulations. Users can implement role-based access controls so that they can manage and restrict access to cloud resources including application data. Last but not least, Cloudify gives telecommunications service providers and operators the chance to incrementally replace their non-virtualized appliance ecosystem with a virtualized infrastructure that implements the network architecture concept known as NFV or Node Functions Virtualization.

Overview of Cloudify Benefits

TOSCA-Based Blueprint Modeling

Blueprint modeling is one of the powerful and innovative features included in Cloudify. With this feature, developers will be able to create blueprints of application topologies using a human-readable data serialization language called YAML ((YAML Ain’t Markup Language). YAML is actually the language used for writing TOSCA-based definitions. TOSCA is a specification that provides developers a standard way to describe the components of their applications, systems, and cloud infrastructures and how these components are connected to each other.

Dynamic, Robust, And User-Friendly Graphic Editor

With Cloudify, creating TOSCA-based blueprints to produce application topology models is a breeze. This is because the platform is built with a user-friendly, dynamic, and robust drawing tool and graphical editor called Composer which has a drag-and-drop UI design. Thus, developers simply need to drag node components from the nodes stencil and drop them onto the canvas. Once the node components are placed on the canvas, they can then specify the properties of such components and inputs and show how the components relate to each other. In just a matter of few clicks and minutes, they will be able to build complete application topologies aimed at attaining the desired state they want.

Two-Way Editing Feature

Cloudify’s graphical editor comes with a very interesting feature which allows developers to edit the source code of their blueprints directly from the graphic editor. This two-way editing feature of Composer is very efficient and powerful in such a way that as they drag and drop node components for the blueprints they are creating, the tool permits them to also make changes to their blueprints quickly through source code editing. Also, this feature makes it possible for developers to duplicate sections from different blueprints and incorporate them to the blueprints they are currently working on. In the same manner, scripts that are classified as resources can be modified right straight from the graphic editor.

Access And Manipulate Data Using Templates

The cloud orchestration platform is built with templates that are dedicated to different types of users depending on their roles. These templates are comprised of predefined pages that allow users to quickly access the data they need as well as view specific areas of the platform. For instance, there is a set of templates that they can use if they want to run and manage services, and another set is available for orchestrating the infrastructure and configuring the settings of the platform.

Out-Of-The-Box Widgets

Cloudify also offers a diverse collection of out-of-the-box widgets that enables users to view data within the platform, collect data from third-party systems, and perform specific actions. Organized in a catalog and regarded as the building blocks of the platform’s architecture, the widgets let users view blueprints, deployments, and executions, access plugins and lists of snapshots, and track the users, tenants, and groups who are using the platform.

Create And Configure Custom Widgets

In addition, users can build and design their own widgets; and add them to the built-in widgets found in the catalog. Thus, they will be able to combine different sets of widgets and decide which widgets they want to include in each template or page. As they create custom widgets, they can configure how each widget will function, how it will present data, and who can access it.

Tenant Management

Tenant management is another feature available in Cloudify. With this feature, users can organize their cloud resources into separate tenants. These tenants can be accessed from the component of the platform called Cloud Manager. Because of this, users are allowed to access resources only from the tenants that are assigned to them. This clearly defines which team members can upload blueprints, executions, deployments, and other resources to specific tenants.

Orchestrate Network Functions Virtualization Infrastructures

Cloudify helps telecommunications service providers and operators embrace a new approach in managing and orchestrating their applications, services, and infrastructures. This is because the platform implements the network concept known as Network Functions Virtualization or NFV. NFV utilizes an ecosystem that virtualizes software implementations of network node functions into building blocks that can be connected to each other and combined together to produce communication services.

Virtualize And Orchestrate Your Infrastructure Incrementally

What’s great about this is that Cloudify doesn’t force users from the telecommunications industry to immediately abandon their existing non-virtualized appliance infrastructure. Rather, the platform permits them to implement the NFV infrastructure in an incremental process wherein services, networking, and systems can be introduced and added one at a time. This way, they will be able to automate their processes, optimize their existing environments, and protect their current technology investments, while having the opportunity to take advantage of new technologies that they can easily adopt later on.

Optimize IT Governance And Security

The cloud orchestration platform simplifies IT governance and security. Users can apply access controls by setting up different roles and permission levels, allowing them to define who can access their resources and what resources can be accessed based on such roles and permissions.

LDAP Integration Capability

As part of its IT governance and security features, Cloudify supports integration with LDAP, a software protocol used for tracking organizations, individuals, devices, files, and users that belong to a network. Through such integration, Cloudify can authenticate and grant access to users and groups using their LDAP profiles and credentials.

Protect Sensitive Data And Resources Using Secret Storage

Summing it up, Cloudify has a secret storage system that lets users store sensitive information and data on a storage space within the platform’s database which is separated from the storage space being used to keep the blueprints. This way, they will be able to securely keep information such as cloud credentials, passwords, and certificates. In addition, the secret storage can store keys used for accessing the blueprints. If they need to hide certain resources from the platform users or blueprint creators, whether such resources reside in Cloudify or external sources, they can also use the secret storage for that purpose.
