What is LibreOffice?

LibreOffice is a powerful suite of office applications aimed at unleashing the creativity and enhancing the productivity of families, businesses, charities, and government departments around the world. The free and open source office suite is built based on the OpenOffice codebase, making it an active successor to the discontinued open source office solution. Having a clean user interface and feature-rich tools, LibreOffice can produce neat and professional-looking documents of any type: letters, master theses, brochures, financial reports, marketing presentations, technical drawings, and diagrams.

Furthermore, LibreOffice supports multiple document formats which include Microsoft Word (.doc, .docx), Microsoft Excel (.xls, .xlsx), Microsoft PowerPoint (.ppt, .pptx), Microsoft Publisher, as well as the modern document format known as OpenDocument Format or ODF. Last but not least, the office suite offers a wide range of extensions and templates that enable users to add new functionalities to its tools and create documents faster and smarter.

Overview of LibreOffice Benefits

Create, Edit, and Enhance All Types Of Documents

LibreOffice delivers a powerful and fully featured word processing and desktop publishing tool that makes it easy for users to create and edit various types of documents. Whether they are producing simple documents like quick memos or complex documents such as books; the tool can help them do their tasks.

The word processor permits users to apply custom styles to their documents, allowing them to create documents that look good and easier to read. Through the aid of its AutoCorrect dictionary, they can immediately spot typographical errors and spelling mistakes on the fly. It has an AutoComplete feature which provides suggested words and phrases while they are typing and instantly completes the words or phrases that they started typing.

Intuitive Spreadsheet Program

The office suite has an intuitive and easy to learn spreadsheet program which makes it possible to collect, cross-tabulate, and summarize data from corporate databases; assisting users in obtaining insights into their data. In addition, the program is built with wizards that guide them in selecting and using the advanced features within it.

The spreadsheet tool supports multiple users. Because of this, team members can easily collaborate on their workbooks and spreadsheets, and at the same time, editing conflicts are eliminated. They will be able to share spreadsheets with each other and owners of spreadsheets can add new data to spreadsheets in just a few clicks.

Produce Presentation Materials With Media-Rich Content

LibreOffice is equipped with a presentation tool that enables users to create presentation materials with media-rich content. They can incorporate attractive 3D scenes and images into their presentations as well as add 2D objects and components.

When it comes to managing slideshow presentations, the presentation program is equipped with a feature called Slide Show Mode. This feature allows users to control how slides are being shown and sequenced. Thus, they can specify which slides should be displayed, apply a manual or timed slide transition, and activate or deactivate pointer and navigator visibility.

Eye-Popping Drawings, Graphics, And Diagrams

The office suite also provides a powerful drawing program that lets users enhance their documents with eye-popping sketches, graphics, and diagrams. The tool is ideal for producing technical drawings, brochures, and posters. With such program, they will be able to control, group, and crop graphical objects.

The drawing program can automatically calculate and show linear dimensions as users draw objects and elements. In addition, it allows them to create photo albums and convert images to different formats.

Fast, Flexible, And Powerful Database Management System

Another program available in LibreOffice is its fast, flexible, and powerful database management system. This system offers native drivers for widely used multi-user database engines such as MySQL/MariaDB, Adabas D, MS Access and PostgreSQL. Also, it enables users to virtually connect to other database engines. The program comes with a set of predefined table definitions which streamline the process of tracking assets, customers, sales orders, invoices, and other items.

Neat Equation And Formula Editor

LibreOffice offers a neat equation and formula editor which is used for inserting perfectly formatted mathematical and scientific equations and formulas into text documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and drawings. With the formula editor, equations and formulas with various elements can be created. Thus, users will be able to include fractions, exponents, indices, integrals, mathematical functions, inequalities, and matrices in their equations and formulas.

Improve Accessibility With The OpenDocument Format (ODF)

LibreOffice maximizes the liberal and flexible capabilities of the OpenDocument Format or ODF, a fully open and ISO standardised file format which is also supported by other office programs. As a result, documents and data can be easily transferred between different programs and operating systems without the need to pay for license fees or worry about vendor lock-ins.

Extensions And Templates

Summing it up, the office suite has an extensive library of powerful and smart extensions. These extensions can be accessed from the LibreOffice Extension Center. The extensions are actually software plugins which can be installed to expand the functionalities of LibreOffice or any of its tools. Aside from its comprehensive collection of extensions, LibreOffice comes with built-in document templates which can be utilized to simplify and automate any task related to document creation.

LibreOffice Position In Our Categories

Since businesses have particular business requirements, it is rational that they steer clear of adopting an all-encompassing, ”best” software solution. Regardless, it would be difficult to try to find such a software solution even among branded software systems. The right step to do can be to tabulate the various critical factors which demand investigation such as critical features, plans, technical skill aptitude of staff, organizational size, etc. Next, you must double down on your product research through and through. Have a look at these LibreOffice evaluations and check out each of the software systems in your list in detail. Such comprehensive product research ensures you drop poorly fit applications and choose the system which includes all the tools you require company requires in growing the business.

Position of LibreOffice in our main categories:

TOP 10

LibreOffice is one of the top 10 Office Software products

If you are considering LibreOffice it might also be a good idea to analyze other subcategories of Office Software gathered in our base of SaaS software reviews.

Organizations have diverse wants and requirements and no software solution can be ideal in such a scenario. It is pointless to try to find an ideal off-the-shelf software app that meets all your business needs. The smart thing to do would be to adapt the application for your specific requirements, staff member skill levels, finances, and other elements. For these reasons, do not rush and subscribe to well-publicized leading applications. Though these may be widely used, they may not be the ideal fit for your particular needs. Do your homework, look into each short-listed application in detail, read a few LibreOffice Office Software reviews, speak to the maker for clarifications, and finally select the product that presents what you require.

PROS: I've been loving LibreOffice ever since I started using it because it's so intuitive and features-packed. I've been using it for my professional work and it delivers. I'd say its key strengths are: being free, stable, cross-platform compatible, multi-language support, good community, and open-source.

CONS: Nothing much. I mean, it's a powerful and stable office solution with a good community to back you up in case you need assistance. But I guess there are still some compatibility issues with other solutions, especially the paid ones.

PROS: Created by The Document Foundation, it's an open-source software solution developed in Python, Java, and C++. It's an office suite with apps that we use to develop spreadsheets, presentations, documents, and others with. It's available for Windows, macOS, and GNU / Linux Distribution and can be executed in x86 or x64 architecture.

CONS: One of the major drawbacks in using LibreOffice is that it was first launched in 2010 and the vendor does not have dedicated support available. Pretty much all you can get is a response from the community.

PROS: The most amazing thing about LibreOffice is that it's free and is an open-source software that can rival the MS Office. It looks like an office suite created for professional works and can compete with the GSuite. It has a word, excel, database, and powerpoint processor. It can also work natively with MAC, Linux, Or Windows and the user experience from one OS isn't much different from the others. The apps comprising LibreOffice are very lightweight but stable. The GUI has also improved a lot and is now looking great. The calc and writer apps can cover most of our professional needs all by themselves.

CONS: Compared to its MS Office equivalent, Base is several levels below. And it's quite disappointing. The icons are also not uniform for every app.The size itself can become an issue for icons because they're different from each other. And although Draw is personally very helpful to me, editing PDF files using it created an enormous amount of elements that it caused a seriously heavy lag.

PROS: I like that LibreOffice works perfectly on different platforms such as Mac, Linux, and Windows. It's an open-source solution, complete with office suite programs that allow the creation of text files, engaging presentations, and working with numbers and formulas. It might be completely free but it's not a trial version at all. It's very stable and brimming with features. The open license is also the best because you can get it for no price and you're free to modify it and make a new app for the community.

CONS: Occasionally, errors occur and you're forced to close the app. That's a waste of time and effort especially since when that happens, you can't save your PDF files. The interface is also kinda old looking so it might drive other users off. And finally, file conversion, which is a big feature of Microsoft Office, isn't fully supported by LibreOffice so there are times when files look as if they're corrupted.

PROS: I like LibreOffice's capability to fulfill my everyday office needs like making graphic presentations for the meeting, using the spreadsheet, and creating documents. It's also not occupying too many resources of my system and in fact, its resource management capability is pretty high because it can open big files without lagging. Moreover, the software is free. But people are willing to donate because of how helpful this is. Its multi-platform architecture is also pretty neat so I can use it for Linux, Mac, or Windows.

CONS: Well, this one's understandable but I think there's still a long way before this reaches the level of Microsoft Office. But again, this is understandable because LibreOffice's developers only rely on donations. It also presents a pretty steep learning curve. But as a solution to that, LibreOffice provides free courses on how to manage and operate the program. There's no option for sharing files online too because it doesn't support Google Drive and the likes.

PROS: First launched as a community-based project, LibreOffice has gone a long way and has now become a viable contender as a top editing tool for documents. It's 100% free and offers lots of amazing fonts. It's also capable of saving in various formats and has good charts you can use. And although this software is at its best when running on Linux, it works with other operating systems.

CONS: There's no mail editing client feature and visually, it's not the best. Also, during the crashes that occur at times, your file isn't saved. Compared to MS Office, it lacks a lot of functionalities, but since it's free, there's nothing to complain about.

PROS: It's a very useful and robust solution that can run on various types of operating systems. It allows us to create different types of files like text docs, slideshows, and spreadsheets. It's a lightweight tool which is free of charge. It's easy to use and does not demand much from a technical perspective.

CONS: It has a lot of room for improvement and I'm sure there are some experts out there who can develop this software further. LibreOffice doesn't provide good tech support and most of our problems must be solved through scouring for a solution on forums and such. There are instances of lacking or messy content too, probably because of incompatibility issues.

PROS: In summary, LibreOffice is powerful, easy to use, and free. It was created as an open-source project by a team of developers and it doesn't require a license purchase for use, unlike others. The latest update has brought a lot of good improvement for the program especially the interface. It has icons now that better fit the app and with better descriptions too. But it's not just the aesthetics. Performance-wise, LibreOffice has also upgraded a lot. There are loads of new functions not present before that made it a step closer from becoming a rival for the MS Office. It also supports different OS like MacOS, Linux, and Windows. I'm personally using Linux and Windows for work and I can attest that it does indeed work perfectly on both of them.

CONS: There are several attractive themes available. So I have no idea why they choose the ugliest of them all to be the default one. Not only do the icons look outdated but they're not descriptive too. The default theme just doesn't feel right in the system.

Also, we can use this tool in both the Windows and Linux OS. Thanks to this, we can visualize files without too much hassle.

CONS: Configuration of this tool is done through the command line or console so if you're not familiar with that then it'll be tricky. Also, some of the documents created through MS Word displays wrongly using LibreOffice.

PROS: This is an office suite that you can avail for free. It's also competitive enough to become a good alternate for paid solutions. It has apps for creating and editing documents, presentations, spreadsheets, and database. One of its biggest edge is the compatibility it has to many other office solution that allows us to open and modify files from them without making too much change in the information within. The apps included in this office suite allows us to create documents, from simple ones like a cover letter to an entire thesis ready for publishing. There are apps for simplifying calculations and accounting as well. And since LibreOffice uses an open license, we can use this in our company without paying for anything. Meanwhile, the advanced users will enjoy the support for OpenCL and VBA too.

CONS: I think the entire interface must undergo a thorough overhaul. It's pretty poor at this state.

PROS: I first used LibreOffice back when I was still a student so I really don't have any experience with other solutions to make a comparison with. Therefore, my evaluation is solely based on my experience with the app itself. To start with, LibreOffice is an office solution that contains a processor for presentations, slides, simple database, word, and spreadsheet. Now that I'm a professional and is using this for my work, I actually don't feel the need for installing a paid solution because all the features I require are covered by this program. Also, I'd admit that there's quite a steep learning curve for this software, especially for the inexperienced ones. On the technical level, it's stable. But there are occurrences of a crash due to hardware, power, or software failure. However, you don't need to concern yourself with lost data because there's a useful recovery tool for that.

CONS: All apps have negative sides on them and LibreOffice is no exception. For my money, here are the aspects that this software needs improvement upon GUI and Macros. The interface, the icons, in particular, are inconsistent and aren't uniform with each other. Some are bigger and others are not descriptive. As for the Macros, the learning curve is definitely the steepest around here and it must be taken into account by the developer. They could strive to make this simpler somehow.

PROS: There's no need to purchase an expensive license to avail and use this app's full features and I love that. It's an amazing alternative solution for paid office suites that could be used for academic, home, and professional needs. The last update has brought a lot of improvements that right now I already consider this equal or even greater than MS Office. Some of the improved features are the macros which can now run a lot faster and the language that has undergone a significant upgrade so it can be understood much easier now by users. Also, the tech support has been improved so issues can now be resolved more quickly and moderators are always there to provide us with assistance should we need one.

CONS: I would like it if it has a feature for changing themes. Just "light" and "dark" skins are good enough because I'm working for extended hours at a time and my eyes get tired of the screen being too bright all the time.

It's also compatible with the Windows OS and Linux. This means you can view the produced documents in either of the operating systems without causing too much inconvenience.

CONS: While it's an intuitive tool that does not have a steep learning curve, having basic office knowledge helps a lot. It's compatible with documents created using MS Office apps like Word. There are, however, instances when the compatibility fails and results to misspelled and skipped words.

PROS: When I first use this a few years back, I was surprised cause it can do the same stuff than the software I'm currently using with the difference being LibreOffice is free while the other one has a license I paid for. Technically, this is a sufficient office solution for most of my tasks. The default user interfaces isn't the most pleasant to the eye but it's easy to fix. You only have to access the menu and change the theme to one of your likings. Also, it supports numerous formats of other apps like OpenOffice, and MS Office. This means that documents created through those other programs can be opened and edited in LibreOffice.

CONS: The default user interface almost made me not use this but good thing I learned how easy it is to change themes. Another problem I'd like to point out is the options' organization. It's hard to find which option you're looking for because of its chaotic setup.

PROS: Ever since I started my PhD, I've been using this office suite for my works. I'm utilizing the presentation, calc, and writer apps and they're great. At no point did I feel that I needed an option that's not present in LibreOffice. And the best thing about it was that it happened a while ago; the suite has improved greatly since. It's now a very efficient program that I can use it for my professional works like creating Memorandum and other documents. It also allows me to write presentation, letters, in any paper format like A3, A7, or custom format.

CONS: Most of the program in the office suite is very good. Easy to use and doesn't run into troubles. The exception for that is Base which is reeking with problems and isn't compatible with the MS Office counterpart app, therefore I can't import databases. Also, the query speed is below average so if we need to work on databases, especially large one, we go with MySQL.

Also, it's free. This is a blessing for startup businesses who can't afford to pay the pricey licenses of other similar solutions.

Why is FinancesOnline free? Why is FinancesOnline free?

FinancesOnline is available for free for all business professionals interested in an efficient way to find top-notch SaaS solutions. We are able to keep our service free of charge thanks to cooperation with some of the vendors, who are willing to pay us for traffic and sales opportunities provided by our website. Please note, that FinancesOnline lists all vendors, we’re not limited only to the ones that pay us, and all software providers have an equal opportunity to get featured in our rankings and comparisons, win awards, gather user reviews, all in our effort to give you reliable advice that will enable you to make well-informed purchase decisions.
