What is PivotData REST?

PivotData REST is a platform that enables users to effortlessly embed analytics and pivot table reports into any web application. With PivotData Rest Service, it is quick and easy to connect directly to various type of data sources including SQL databases (SQL Server, PostgreSql, Mysql) and MongoDB. Configuration of data sources is fast and simple via JSON config and you can embed web pivot tables on your web page and applications in moments.

PivotData microservice is an ideal solution when you want to incorporate advanced pivot tables and charts builder into an existing web application. The system is also useful in retrieving embedded analytics and ad-hoc BI reporting for SQL/MongoDB data sources as well as calculating data for custom web-based BI dashboards and creating pivot reports on the server-side (scheduled reports, exports).

Overview of PivotData REST Benefits

PivotData REST Service is a .NET Core microservice (web application) that provides a web API for calculating pivot tables in the real time (in-memory OLAP engine + built-in ROLAP). This application may be hosted either on Windows or Linux.

Among the many advantages PivotData REST Service includs direct connection to SQL or MongoDb databases (no ETL), custom connectors may be added on-demand (.net plugins). Users will also love creating and configuring simple data sources/cubes with JSON file (no programming needed).

The software also offers a number of advanced pivot table options (percentages, differences, custom formatting & labels, TOP-N limits, server-side pagination) as well as formula measures, report parameters for database-level filtering. With PivotData REST Service, users benefit from transparent microservice security with JSON Web Tokens.

The application comes with a web API for rendering pivot tables to HTML and other formats (JSON, CSV, Excel, PDF). Microservice is shipped with front-end components (javascript) for pivot table and chart builder UI; these widgets could be easily integrated with any web application for embedding self-service ad-hoc reports, pre-configured reports or BI dashboards.

Overview of PivotData REST Features

  • Fast in-memory data cubes (no ETL, real-time reporting)
  • Built-in ROLAP engine for SQL/MongoDB data sources
  • Aggregate functions: count/count unique, sum, average, min/max, variance/standard deviation, list/list
  • Unique, custom formula
  • Self-service web pivot tables and pivot charts
  • Calculated members: dimensions and formula measures
  • Report parameters (data source level filtering)
  • Export pivot tables & charts to HTML, JSON, CSV, Excel, PDFlabels grouping with sub-totals, multiple
  • Values in one table
  • Sort table by values, totals or labels
  • Percentage, difference values, custom formatting options
  • Server-side pagination and top N limits for large pivot tables
  • Keyword-based filter for rows & columns
  • Embeddable web pivot table & chart builder for user-defined reports

What Problems Will PivotData REST Solve?

A. Add custom BI dashboards and predefined reports inside existing business applications: a lot of existing web-based business apps (intranet/extranet systems, BPM, SaaS services) don’t provide enough facilities for on-the-fly data analysis and reporting for making everyday data-driven decisions by the employees. PivotData is a perfect solution for this purpose: it is originally designed for embedded usage and BI functionality may be added to the web application in several days.

B. Provide self-service ad-hoc reporting functionality to the web application users: in many cases predefined reports cannot cover all needs and users should have the ability to configure their own reports like they can do that in Excel; with PivotData microservice users will able to configure reports by large corporate databases without need to export raw data to CSV or Excel files.

C. Generate periodic (scheduled) reports: PivotData is a server-side solution, so it is possible to use it for automated reports generation; for example, produce personalized workload reports or financial breakdown by the end of period.

It is crucial to note that virtually no service in the IT Development Software category is going to be an ideal solution that can match all the needs of different business types, sizes and industries. It may be a good idea to read a few PivotData REST reviews first as certain software can dominate just in a very narrow set of applications or be designed with a very specific type of industry in mind. Others might work with a goal of being simple and intuitive and consequently lack complex features welcomed by more experienced users. You can also find solutions that cater to a wide group of customers and offer a powerful feature set, however this in most cases comes at a more significant cost of such a solution. Make sure you're aware of your needs so that you buy a software that provides all the functionalities you look for.
