What is Toast POS?

Cloud- and tablet-based restaurant management solution Toast is designed to do away with your old POS while providing both control and business visibility. The platform offers restaurant owners a single solution that has myriad functionalities that include POS, reporting, credit card processing, CRM, gift and loyalty, online ordering and labor and inventory. It won our Expert’s Choice Award for 2018.

Currently available only in the US, Toast POS empowers its clients to improve their restaurant operations and run their business more efficiently. With the software, users stand to make considerable savings while simplifying the needed technologies that restaurateurs require to smoothly run their businesses. It has APIs that allow for integration with popular third-party apps that are used in reporting, labor, gift card, inventory, loyalty, and accounting processes.

For Toast POS’ more restaurant-friendly features, it provides menu management functionalities that include setting time-specific menu pricing such as happy hour menu, customizing menus separately for offline and online audiences, and setting up the entire menu including all groups and sub-groups. A restaurant ordering feature enables users to split menu items and bills among customers, sends automatic alerts to the server when the order is ready and provides the capability to take orders on the fly.

Payments are simplified both for restaurant owners and their clients, with a feature called ‘pay at the table,’ printing receipts or emailing them and tipping servers directly from the tablets. Plus, customers can convert payments into loyalty points that they can redeem on subsequent visits. Toast POS also tracks real-time menu sales and offers in-depth reporting of product mix across all menus.

Moreover, Toast POS helps you streamline your restaurant operations further by integrating POS with payroll management. By eliminating manual hours entry and external processes, you can save time and speed up how you run payroll, approve timesheets, and manage new hires. Prominent customers of this software include Fresh City, Beach Hut Deli, Paris Creperie, and Lakewood Brewing Company.

Overview of Toast POS Benefits

Toast POS is a cloud- and tablet-based restaurant management platform that enables you to rid your business of your old POS and provides you absolute control and real time view of your business at all times. You will find that the best benefits that come with the software are those offered by its integrations, which provide the following features:

Gift and Loyalty Programs

Toast POS can come up with both digital and physical gift cards, allowing restaurants to sell gift cards online or instore. It likewise has a loyalty program integration, which you can link to a card, customer credit card or phone. The loyalty and CRM platform is automatically fed by the POS screens, resulting in more sign ups for such programs.

Inventory

Toast has a real time inventory app that can track food inventory, suppliers, units and prices, all from the comfort of your computer or mobile device. This capability allows you to reorder what you need, when you need it. You can also get to automatically download food cost, inventory and menu reports, which can be used to tweak your menu to make them more popular.

Online Ordering

The popularity of online ordering through mobile devices has prompted the vendor to offer online ordering services for only $50/month whereas other services of its kind charge up to 12% to 15% of the total value of the transaction. With this feature, orders can be routed from the client straight to the system, eliminating the need to reenter data into the POS.

Business Visibility

The app’s support for mobile devices allows users to monitor their businesses’ in real time. You can access sales, labor and menu reporting. In addition, summary emails are automatically sent on a daily basis, allowing you to monitor important alerts and metrics. Valuable reports are also generated helping you boost your operations and management processes.

Table Payment and Line Busting

This feature allows restaurants to serve tables faster while clients get to quickly pay and leave. This can benefit both full service and quick serve restaurants. You can take orders and payments in line, which can boost service and cut bottlenecks effectively. This likewise provides kitchens with more visibility and order lead times.

Customer-facing Screens

This functionality enables users to collect more data while helping clients conclude transactions, provide feedback and join loyalty programs. Customers are not required to join plastic card-based programs as they are already integrated into the digital checkout flow, which further boosts sign up rates.

Flexible Android App

Toast POS’ support for Android devices allows it to integrate with third-party apps, ensure quality and promptly release updates. It likewise provides the needed flexibility, reliability and affordability that restaurants require. This feature allows users to build robust customer databases using detailed analytics.

With Toast POS, servers are likely to get fair tips as the system presents customers with fair tip percentages. Servers can split the bill easily by dragging and dropping each item on the relevant check. If needed, a check can be transferred to another server, or customers can be combined into one. The POS solution, thus, offers an easy method to support multiple check preferences. This helps servers to effortlessly accommodate the requirements and desires of each guest.

Integrate POS with Payroll

Toast POS gives you a centralized hub that integrates your POS system with payroll management. This user-friendly feature automates the syncing of your payroll. Hence, you can accelerate your labor management processes. For one, having a single employee profile streamlines new-hire processes and eliminates having to conduct double-entry of information on separate systems. Furthermore, it speeds up running payroll and timesheet approval.

PROS: We use to have Micros for our POS system. Did a switch to Toast in late 2017 had it about 1 year. The hardware of Toast is more advance. The screen is slimmer than Micros. Also the tablet is amazing. The cloud base is also really nice because I can check the sale for any of my locations on my phone.

CONS: Software 7/1 0 rating, Maybe because Toast is a newer company they haven't figured out all the right calculation for receipts, yet. When you are adding gratuity and tax together the calculation is wrong. Called the support and it has been 6 months already, the support team still hasen't figured it out how to fix it. So every time we have to add gratuity to a tab, the restaurant loses money because of the wrong calculation. Service is 4/10 Try to get a call or email back from onboarding team? Good luck! Credit card Fees 5/10 Not the cheapest out there. And you don't have any option but to only use Toast. Heartland has better rates but can't use them. Also the credit card reader is not chip compliance.

PROS: Thats a good question. There are a lot but I would have to say the dependability and intuitive layout.

CONS: My biggest complaint is the support line. The staff does not seem well prepared for anything other than checking settings. I've found two legitimate bugs that I had to call back and re-explain the problem several times each. I was told everytime that it would get sent to a higher level tech for review which may or maynot have happened as there is no way to see how bugs are being tracked. The future order scheduling make no sense. The system prompts you to give the prep time, then day of order then the order time which is backwards. It should be date, time and then time when ticket prints. Also, the prep time makes little sense as you out in a quantity of hours rather than a clock time which makes much more sense.

PROS: The product is very straight forward, it's easy to use and there's a lack of useless features, or unnecessary steps. The program is streamlined, for both front of house and back of house. It fulfills a lot of features that are necessary in the restaurant workplace while not feeling barebones. Support for the product is stellar as well. They always respond with 24 hours and work with us until the problem is fixed. If the problem isn't fixed, they provide a suitable workaround that allows us to move forward. It has been great to actually talk to a human and not have to go through a help-tree on a FAQ that only vaguely answers the questions we have.

CONS: The checkout/close-out feels unnecessarily complicated. The verbage is odd, and it's over the top for 99% of those using the program. Servers/bartenders/etc. don't need to know every detail of their check out, and the cash drawer system feels convoluted. For all the streamlining that this program has typically, this aspect of Toast feels like a bunch of tangled wires. The reporting is something to be desired. The categories in which it shows you are highly uncustomizable. The report they give you is the report you get. It feels clunky trying to seek out specific details (like, for example, which servers have the most Comp mistakes). And to pull a report longer than a few days is arduous and very buggy. If I want to get a spreadsheet on the sales for, say, the month of February, it might take 5-10 minutes load the report, or it might not load at all.

PROS: Easy to change things 'on the fly'. Easy to implement, and great pricing on hardware/labor for sofware installation. Their customer support is very attentive and can be inventive with 'work arounds. We are also happy that all handheld tablets are equipped with emv chip readers. Financing through their partner Acentium Capital was also very easy--though they did not warn us ahead of time that you need a 'proof of insurance' and almost added on additional costs without warning.

CONS: Terrible for full-service restaurants because you: Cannot track fire times, cannot implement a good BIN system for wine, cannot directly connect to BINWise, Avero, or RESERVE.

Speed of service has improved due to the ease of functionality for our FOH staff. Back office is very simple to understand and use for management.

CONS: Reporting needs to be looked at. The ability to print reports could be improved. There are certain reporting aspects that we would like to see that are currently unavailable.

PROS: This Product features easy to use Hand-Held Tablet devices for most Point of Sale transactions. Our customers find the electronic receipts easy to use and economical. Our servers have more time at heir tables to interact and answer questions which should see a direct increase in gratuities. Couldn't be happier!

CONS: Starting tabs and closing, swiping credit card transaction

PROS: online ordering. easy to use. easy to train employees. easy to read reports of sales and end of days summaries. attentive company. the technician who set up my software still picks up the phone and is quick to help me with any questions I may have. great incentives for existing customers to help company rewards systems, physical gift card compatibility without having to use another company. it's all in one. it's the best.

CONS: the only issue I have had is that you can either have ONLY physical receipts or digital receipts but not the option for both when you need them, but know this company they will have a solution for that in the future.

PROS: It's tough to blame price for being a big reason to switch, but it's definitely a factor at the top of the pack. Right up there with affordability, the mobile support is amazing! Being able to check in-depth store analytics from my iPhone or Android or Tablet or PC helps keep everything in line. Best of all, the data available is very comprehensible and easy to customize.

CONS: There are certain limitations that exists with functionality that may exist on other platforms but, they are always developing the software.

Ease of Use

PROS: I would say that it is super easy to use on both the customer side and the employee side. Also it is super quick and easy to go back to a past order, so finding a specific receipt from a customer has gotten so much easier. Another great feature is how the daily sales are shown at the end of the day.

CONS: Something that can be a little difficult and time consuming is having to type in a modification on a specific order.

PROS: Toast is overall a great product with many features and they are constantly updating their program to make it better every week. The offline mode is great when internet connection is lost and its user friendly interface is great. Master Menu Management saves me a ton of time and their Inventory Manager is fantastic and is even integrated with my GFS accounts which makes me life a lot easier.

CONS: Just a few printing tweeks and or updates could be used. I dont like the fact that I have to use an Epson TM-20. Really wish they would make their program compatible with the Cognitive DLX printers.
