What is Azure Maps?

Azure Maps is a GIS API service platform that allows enterprises, organizations, and developers to incorporate and enable advanced geospatial and mapping functionalities in the applications and solutions they are creating, deploying, and managing using Microsoft Azure cloud services. This platform-as-a-service offering built within Microsoft Azure delivers these GIS functionalities to your web and mobile applications and solutions using various geospatial API services.

With Azure Maps, you can build custom applications where end-users can access dynamic maps they can easily read, navigate, and interact with. The platform also lets you add search capabilities into these applications so they can look for specific places, view them on maps, and access important details about those places. Moreover, Azure Maps give you the ability to produce applications that can provide useful data and insights regarding traffic flow and incidents and calculate the optimal routes between multiple origins and destinations at once.

Overview of Azure Maps Benefits

Mapping

Azure Maps enables you to integrate mapping capabilities into your web and mobile applications. As a result, you can build technology solutions that generate rich, intuitive, and dynamic visualizations of geospatial data. You can use Azure Maps’ render service API to add various map images both in vector and raster format to your applications

The platform also has a JavaScript component that allows you to incorporate standard and open-source map controls to your applications. This helps your end-users interact with maps better and access valuable and up-to-date pieces of information from these maps. The JavaScript component even lets you use your own vector and raster datasets and display them on maps as separate layers of information.

Location Search

The GIS API service platform offers a service API that delivers location search capabilities to your applications. With this, end users can immediately find places that may be useful or interesting for them. Your applications get the functionality to show points of interest that are closest to the end-users and render them on maps. You can also allow end-users to look for places and addresses along a route or within a larger area.

Moreover, the capability to perform geocoding can be enabled in your applications. Thus, end users can search for addresses and find out the geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) for those addresses. They can do reverse geocoding as well.

Traffic & Route Intelligence

Azure Maps works with TomTom and Moovit so you can provide your applications with rich and essential location intelligence. For instance, traffic data are collected from these mobile and location technology providers and integrated into the applications. Thus, end users can view real-time information on traffic flows and incidents around a network of roads and discover alternative routes that shorten their travel time or increase their travel speed.

The platform, furthermore, improves route optimization by allowing applications to calculate the shortest or fastest routes or directions end-users can travel based on the specific conditions, preferences, and requirements they provided. These can include their mode of transportation, time and fuel requirements, weight restrictions, and the nature and type of materials or products they are carrying.

The applications can even calculate and show alternative routes or directions between multiple origins and destinations all at once, taking into account travel time and distance.

Azure Maps Position In Our Categories

Bearing in mind businesses have distinctive business requirements, it is rational they avoid deciding on a one-size-fits-all, “perfect” solution. Just the same, it is almost impossible to try to discover such an app even among well-known software products. The best step to undertake would be to make a list of the numerous key functions which entail deliberation including crucial features, costing, skill competence of staff members, business size, etc. Next, you should follow through your product research through and through. Browse over some of these Azure Maps evaluations and look into the other software products in your list in detail. Such well-rounded research guarantee you take out ill-fitting software products and buy the one which has all the aspects your company requires.

Azure Maps is one of the top 50 GIS Software products

If you are interested in Azure Maps it could also be beneficial to analyze other subcategories of GIS Software listed in our base of SaaS software reviews.

Organizations have different wants and requirements and no software solution can be just right in such a scenario. It is futile to try to find an ideal off-the-shelf software app that meets all your business wants. The smart thing to do would be to modify the system for your unique requirements, worker skill levels, budget, and other elements. For these reasons, do not hasten and subscribe to well-publicized popular solutions. Though these may be widely used, they may not be the ideal fit for your specific needs. Do your groundwork, look into each short-listed application in detail, read a few Azure Maps GIS Software reviews, contact the vendor for clarifications, and finally select the app that offers what you want.

PROS: This is a great map API with helpful features. It determines the distance from one geolocation to another, as well as it helps in searching a place using city name and zip code among other indicators. The app helps determine traffic in an area as well. Moreover, it allows integration with other Azure services and directories.

CONS: We’re having trouble using the Geofencing feature because of its complexity. Sometimes, it doesn’t even work properly. The platform doesn’t feature street view on API connectivity as well, similar to one that Google Map offers. Lastly, the app takes a long time to load in some instances.

PROS: Azure location-based API is an amazing tool that offers a lot of great features and is easy to integrate with company systems. It boasts the powerful 5 API REST, which helps develop apps and web apps, managing and usage of GPS maps, as well as determining routes and traffic conditions. Plus, it’s made from the popular java scripts, so it’s easy to find supports and guides on using it.

CONS: The app lags in some instances, and it doesn’t work in some local places because of IP restrictions. However, selecting the best possible server to use can help.

PROS: This platform suits my company's office well. The azure location-based, for example, perfectly supports cloud computing infrastructures. It helps VM creation, as well as for creating and running web applications, XML web services, and smart client apps among others. And that’s largely because it has almost 100% uptime rate.

CONS: This is a wonderful platform from Microsoft azure. I can’t find any flaws in this app. It works well for our business.

CONS: This app is great, but it still needs a lot of improvements. Good thing, however, that developers tease about new stuff for the app. I hope such features would come to reality soon.
