Overview of Cloudlytics Benefits

Cloudlytics is a one-stop AWS cloud log analytics and monitoring tool for any business based on AWS. It comes with three distinct modules each focusing on a specific needs, namely:

  • Log Analytics
  • Billing Analytics
  • Automation & Monitoring

The log analytics module analyses logs of four AWS services namely S3, CloudFront, ELB and CloudTrail and churns out actionable insights such as the geographic location of the requests, customer behavior with reference to a particular content, whether a request was authorized or not and more. A user can get these insights from the standard reports or event generate custom reports to get specific insights which may not be found in the standard reports.

The billing analytics module helps the user to stay in control of his bills through billing reports. This module gives insights of the costs incurred in a particular month with a service-wise cost breakup. With features like billing alarms, a user also gets notified of any billing spikes beyond a pre-set threshold limit.

As the name suggests, the automation and monitoring services module helps a user to optimize both usage and costs through automated cloud management. A user can automate back-up clean-up operations, keep a check on the health of a website with URL pinger and even turn on/off an instance with the EC2 scheduler.

What Problems Will Cloudlytics Solve?

Scenario 1: A customer faced an unexpected spike in the traffic to his website and also an exponential rise in his billing. All his files being accessed were stored in an S3 bucket. He used the IP report to identify the region from where the files were being accessed. It was noticed that only three IPs were responsible for such a sudden rise thus identifying the cyber-attack on his website. He further employed geo-fencing techniques to block users from the identified geography to avoid further attacks.

Scenario 2: For a customer who has multiple linked accounts tied to his payer account the billing analytics module gives drill-downs to the monthly costs incurred by every linked account and each resource within its environment.

Scenario 3: Though AWS allows users to set delete on termination condition for an EBS volume at the time of launch of an instance, it is not a facility used by all. This means there is a possibility for resources to stay idle in an environment long after their purpose is served. This results in unnecessary billing of the idling resources. The orphaned resource notification of Cloudlytics allows a user to get notified of any idle resources at hourly, daily, weekly or monthly intervals and also delete them on request.
