Cerner EMR Review

Cerner EMR
Our score: 9.1 User satisfaction: 100%

What is Cerner EMR?

Cerner EMR is a tool that belongs to a collection and set of unified electronic health record systems and clinical solutions that are designed to streamline the workflow of physicians and nurses, reduce costs, and enhance patient safety. As such, Cerner PowerChart Ambulatory EMR is an electronic medical records system which delivers powerful tools and features to physicians and healthcare companies and organizations as they provide ambulatory practices.

Described as a customizable EHR software application, Cerner EMR offers both onsite and offsite hosting that can be used for small to large practices. It has the goal of enhancing the coordination of patient care and document by allowing healthcare providers access an enterprise-view of clinical information to create and apply decisions that would promote patient safety. Moreover, Cerner PowerChart Ambulatory EHR is utilized to empower patients making them proactive as they communicate with their providers and physicians.

Finally, Cerner’s PowerChart Ambulatory EHR is HIPAA compliant.

Overview of Cerner EMR Benefits

Cerner EMR offers dynamic documentation tools. This dynamic documentation can be observed in how it eliminates the doubling of charting information. The software enables users to automatically transfer charting information into different areas of a patient’s health record. It supports a variety of inputting methods which include free text, voice recognition, structured, and code words.

The auto-texting feature of this electronic medical records system is a noticeable functionality in its dynamic documentation. Auto-texting allows users to automatically pull up and call out a pre-completed information by using triggers. Triggers are codes which can be made up of letters, unique characters, or a combination thereof. Auto-texting is applied to any free text fields in the software and any entries or information inputted by users can be saved as an auto-text. When an information is saved as an auto-text, users can set up and define their triggers so that the next time they enter the same information into a particular free text field,  all they have to do is to enter the trigger or code which would automatically input the information into that field. This feature reduces documentation burden on the part of physicians and staff saving valuable time.

Cerner EMR also highlights its powerful integration features. Through a third party integration, the processing of medication prescription refills is done quickly since such integration enables users to connect and coordinate with different pharmacies or a specific pharmacy depending on the choice of their patient. It also supports integration with labs allowing the fast sending of orders as well as the  receiving of  lab results instantly. With this feature, coordination between providers and facilities is enhanced.

Booking of appointments, viewing of clinical information, requesting refills, updating information, and sending of files by patients are also done quickly because Cerner EMR has a patient portal that serves as a secure location where patients and providers can communicate. Patients can send secure messages to providers and staff through this portal. This feature makes patients proactive and at the same time cooperative in their health and care management.

PROS: What I like best about Cerner is that it makes content creation very simple and straightforward. I never run out of options whenever I use this tool.

CONS: Sometimes, it can get too simple--maybe even redundant in some areas. I’ve noticed that there are duplicates to some of my data. There is one particular feature, Med Recs, that I don’t completely understand.

PROS: I like Cerner more than its well-known competitor, Epic. In particular, I find it very easy to use--with most of its commands and elements right within reach. I also love how convenient it is. If I need to retrieve data about my clients, I can easily do so without much problem. Updating data don’t take up too much time too.

CONS: I don’t think I have any major issues with Cerner. However, I am noting here that there are some data that Cerner repeats within its output.

PROS: There is a new version of Cerner that has been recently launched and boy did they roll out a lot of great features. They’ve introduced more options from their drop-down caged templates now. Plus, what’s more exciting is that they now have a set combination of diagnosis-medication which I find particularly helpful.

CONS: The new Dynamic Documentation feature does not seem to recognize multiple user updates. For example, I originally gave the comments about a patient on his/her chart. If the doctor signs this off, Cerner does not save a different version with said doctor as an author. Instead, it makes it look as if I approved my own notes. It’s not too much of a big deal, but it does get in the way of accountability.

PROS: Cerner is a huge upgrade from our previous EHR program. Now I know how it feels to work with a software that actually does its job efficiently!

CONS: Some of my co-workers had a little trouble learning this program. It’s not exactly easy to learn, plus I’ve noticed instances of program crashes.

PROS: I love how this allows us to hand off files from one company unit to the next. The tool itself is not complicated to navigate too, plus its auto-lock feature keeps our information safe and confidential.

CONS: There are just some aspects that Cerner fails in--innovation, being one of them. I wish that they would finally make the decision to create a version for cloud. With our work needing us to be constantly on-the-go and on-the-move, we don’t always have the luxury to sit down on our computers and access patient data. It would be best if we could just tap into an online resource to double check treatment history among other important details. An option to get blow-by-blow updates on the treatments would be great too.

PROS: In my opinion, Cerner is the best among its competitors in the market. I like how each user can update their preferences based on their function within a larger scheme of their work process. With the tool customized to serve each role best, this has vastly improved the quality of our work and has made our team more efficient too. And because Cerner takes care of tracking specific work items for us, we can focus on what we like to do best: catering to our clients and making sure that their needs are met.

CONS: Sometimes Cerner works perfectly well and its features all run smoothly. However, there are days when it would just, somehow, lose its integration with other solutions and we’d be stuck in a certain task.

PROS: When it comes to Electronic Health Records, Cerner definitely leads the flock. By far, it is the most reliable tool I’ve worked with. Its integrations with other solutions is seamless and its features are impressively robust too!

CONS: Cerner seems to work best on a digital environment. Its graphs do not translate well on print.

PROS: Cerner takes care of two major things for me: efficiency and accuracy. Efficient because it has set templates for notes and comments that I can simply choose from a drop-down list. This saves me a lot of time from manually filling out specific sections in the chart. On particularly busy days, I can just take a quick glance at the home menu to see an overview of the data I’m dealing with. It helps with accuracy too because it marks the timeline with which I am working on.

CONS: There’s not much room for flexibility when using Cerner. Although those pre-filled drop-down options are indeed useful, I wish we can expound more on those notes and fill it up with more information.

PROS: If there’s anything that Cerner can offer, it’s simplicity and ease of use. It’s both useful and simple--a pretty great combination if you ask me.

CONS: I wish there would be more quality checks within the program itself. It takes a while for the data to load whenever there is an update too.

PROS: I love how we don’t have to maintain piles and piles of paper charts anymore. Moving our data in a digital environment has been one of the best things that we’ve done--and choosing Cerner was an added bonus to this.

CONS: Admittedly, this is a pretty difficult tool to get to know. With the number of features that Cerner offers, there are a gazillion things to learn too. If this isn’t difficult enough in itself, there’s no support team to run to also. If you run into any problem, you’d have to file for a ticket so their IT team can try to help you out. I would honestly feel much better if I can talk to someone, rather than filing a ticket online.

PROS: There are actually a number of things that I like about this program. For one, it allows me to create easily understandable and data-packed graphs at an impressive speed. It’s nice to be able to customize the cells to aid in better understanding of the data. It encourages collaboration too. Cerner really allocates space for comments and suggestions in the outputs so that my co-workers and bosses can add notes if they feel like a section can still be improved.

CONS: It would be nice if Cerner would develop a feature that allows its users to control the specific section that can be printed out, without having to print the whole chart/graph. This is, of course, just a small issue compared to the benefits that Cerner has given me and my team.

PROS: There are a number of things that I like about Cerner, actually. At the core of it all, I love how user-friendly it is. I can quickly tap into previously saved templates to make me more efficient. There’s a pretty solid QA feature in place too, eliminating the occasional typo and wrong spelling.

CONS: You’d have to be constantly vigilant in saving all of your documents when you work with Cerner because it does not have an auto-save feature that we have all become dependent on. Plus, somehow, the program does not allow me to edit existing outputs very easily. There’s no work-around to this issue as far as I can tell.
