While HDFS is created to be highly fault-tolerant, the system continues to function because data is transferred rapidly between compute nodes once a node fails. The design effectively diminishes the risk of catastrophic failure, even if and when numerous nodes fail simultaneously.
When HDFS digests in data, it breaks the information down into separate pieces and delivers them to different nodes in a cluster, which allows for parallel processing. The file system also replicates each piece of data multiple times and delivers the copies to individual nodes, placing at least one copy on a different server rack than the others. This means that the data on nodes that crash can be found elsewhere within a cluster, enabling the processing to continue while the failure is resolved.
