What is OpenRefine?

Formerly Google Refine, OpenRefine is an open-source data manipulation tool that allows users to clean messy data and transform it from one format to another. It also allows extending the existing data with external data as well as web services. The tool is available for Microsoft Windows, Linux and Apple Mac as a downloadable kit. Being an open source software OpenRefine is now managed by a group of volunteers passionate about making the software greater. It can be connected to various reconciliation services, while some operations can also be automated using existing OR libraries that use the OpenRefine API. The software also supports a variety of extensions that can be installed to add more functionality and are available as a free download.

Overview of OpenRefine Benefits

Data Exploration

OpenRefine makes it easier to explore large sets of data and supports various formats. Exploring large sets of inconsistent data can be a very time consuming and tedious process. The tool is designed to work with messy data and groups together identical data, making it easier for users to locate inconsistencies. Trimming transformations can be applied to whole columns of data, which can fix a lot of inconsistencies in a single click. The clustering features help fix inconsistent grouping and essentially re-groups the groups. The software tracks all operations and allows users to undo/redo any operation in case something goes wrong. The software helps see the big picture of the data and discover and fix inconsistencies without worrying about making mistakes.

Data Cleaning, Transformation and Reconciliation

Since the software is not web-based and is installed locally, users don’t have to upload their sensitive data and can perform all operations on their own systems. In addition to dealing with messy data, the software also helps deal with data that is not in the required format such as converting text into table. Dataset linking and extension tools allow extending the data with web services and external data. This is made possible through a variety of downloadable extensions that are available on OpenRefine’s wiki page. Several tasks can be automated using the existing libraries that rely on the powerful API.
