What is Subversion?

Apache Subversion is a full-featured version control system that boasts of a model, design, and interface that is said to be more advanced than other Concurrent Versioning System (CVS) offerings in the market to date. The open-source revision control and software versioning platform’s primary solutions include interactive conflict resolution, merge tracking, and file locking, with the most recent updates containing features for path-based authorization, interactive resolvers, LZ4 compression, and shelving.

CVS users attest to Subversion’s centralized version control capabilities, which are said to be a reliable repository of valuable data and is easy enough to be learned and used even by those with only beginner’s knowledge of software development. In terms of usage, Subversion supports the requirements of various types of users and projects whether they be individuals or enterprise level organizations.

Overview of Subversion Benefits

Subversion directories are versioned as first-class objects – similar to files – with copying, deleting, and renaming as versioned operations. This allows users to access the exact file that they need, depending on the version.

Free-form versioned metadata allows arbitrary properties to be attached to any file or directory. These properties are key or value pairs, and are versioned just like the objects they are attached to. Subversion also delivers a way to attach arbitrary key or value properties to a revision. Note that these properties are not versioned, since they attach metadata to the version-space itself. However, they can be edited anytime.

With Subversion, no part of a commit takes effect until the entire commit has succeeded. Revision numbers are per-commit – not per-file- and a commit’s log message is attached to its revision, not stored redundantly in all the files affected.

Branching and tagging are priced fairly so as to help save costs. Both are implemented in terms of an underlying “copy” operation, which only take up a small, constant amount of space. Any copy is a tag; and if a user starts committing on a copy, then it’s a branch as well.

One of the latest models of Subverison introduces merge tracking: automated assistance with managing the flow of changes between lines of development, and with the merging of branches back into their sources. The 1.5 release of merge tracking has basic support for common scenarios; we will be extending the feature in upcoming releases.

The smart thing to do would be to customize the system for your special requirements, worker skill levels, budget, and other elements. For these reasons, do not hurry and pay for well-publicized leading solutions. Though these may be widely used, they may not be the perfect fit for your unique wants. Do your research, check out each short-listed system in detail, read a few Subversion reviews, speak to the seller for explanations, and finally select the app that offers what you require.
