Gusto is a powerful platform that combines payroll, benefits administration, HR and compliance functionalities in a single, simplified package. It won our Expert’s Choice Award for 2017 as well as the Supreme Software Award for the same year.

Designed for small businesses in the United States, Gusto makes it easy for these companies to stay on top of their  workforce’s core HR needs. The app also delivers a solid set of payroll features, coupled with an unusually well-designed user interface, and innovation and automation functionalities that impress even experts. Plus, businesses get to use it at a fair price tailored to their exact needs.

Gusto states that the company’s mission is to simplify complicated business processes such as HR, benefits, and payroll for modern companies. This company’s software is used by more than 60,000 companies nationwide and it has offices in San Francisco and Denver.

What does it offer? To start with, Gusto provides payroll, 401(k), and workers’ comp insurance nationwide. Health benefits are available in 17 states, with more coming: Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and Washington.

The platform is also capable of automating the calculation, payment, and submission of a company’s local, state and federal payroll taxes. In the meanwhile, it will ensure that businesses can pay through direct deposit or check, automate calculations, year-end forms, and taxation to avoid critical errors, and save even more time handling bookkeeping on its own.

Gusto’s monthly price starts at $39 base plus $6 per person for full-service payroll. This includes new hire reporting, direct deposit, year-end W-2s and 1099s, unlimited payroll runs, off-cycle and bonus payrolls, and more. You don’t need to sign a long-term contract and are free to suspend your account at any time.You can also add on health insurance, 401(k), other benefits, and HR tools to manage your team.

Gusto also offers a 1 month free trial which starts after you run your first payroll. If you need help, you can contact the company’s customer support agents via phone, email, or chat. They are based in Denver and San Francisco and provide assistance Monday through Friday, 6am to 5pm Pacific.

Pros: Gusto is a big help for both employees and employers. It notifies staff members about their salary credit. The vendor’s online chat support is simply superb as they resolve my issues quickly. This app has helped to simplify our payroll operations and we are also able to save a lot of time. Last, but not the least, the pricing plans are very affordable.

Cons: The vendor could have done the implementation in a better way. They could have provided a detailed timeline of what they were going to do. Plus, they could have clarified what input I needed to give. In the end it was fine but I had to do some of the work myself.

Pros: Product is easy to use with a modern interface and clear pricing.

Cons: They clearly do not have any consideration for security. I was closing my account as my business is quite small and I no longer needed to run payroll. When they sent me an email to go over next steps, they sent an email to myself and the owner of ANOTHER business who was also looking to close her account. The email started with Dear Zack and (other owner's name), and any replies from either one of us got CC'd to the other. After myself and this other owner called them out on it, they stopped responding to our emails. If they can't even keep emails separate and secure, how can I trust them with bank accounts, social security numbers, and tax information? Needless to say I am NOT happy, and I would never give this company another penny of my business.
