What is Gusto?

Gusto is an online HR services tool designed to simplify the complex and tedious processes involving payroll, benefits, and HR for modern businesses. It won our Expert’s Choice Award for 2019 as well as the Supreme Software Award for the same year.

The app also delivers a solid set of payroll features, coupled with an unusually well-designed user interface, and innovation and automation functionalities that impress even experts. Plus, businesses get to use it at a fair price tailored to their exact needs.

Gusto states that the company’s mission is to simplify complicated business processes such as HR, benefits, and payroll for modern companies. This company’s software is used by more than 100,000 companies nationwide and it has offices in San Francisco, Denver, and New York.

What does it offer? To start with, Gusto provides payroll, 401(k), and workers’ comp insurance nationwide. Health benefits are available in 17 states, with more coming: Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, and Washington.

Built mainly for small businesses, the platform is also capable of automating the calculation, payment, and submission of a company’s payroll taxes at whatever government level. In the meanwhile, it will ensure that businesses can pay through bank deposit or check options, automate calculations, year-end forms, and taxation to avoid critical errors, and save even more time to handle bookkeeping on its own.

Gusto’s monthly price starts at $39 base plus $6 per person for full-service payroll. This includes new hire reporting, direct deposit, year-end W-2s and 1099s, unlimited payroll runs, off-cycle, and bonus payrolls, and more. You don’t need to sign a long-term contract and are free to suspend your account at any time. You can also add on health insurance, 401(k), other benefits, and HR tools to manage your team.

Gusto also offers a 1-month free trial which starts after you run your first payroll. If you need help, you can contact the company’s customer support agents via phone, email, or chat. They are based in Denver and San Francisco and provide assistance Monday through Friday, 6 am to 5 pm Pacific.

Overview of Gusto Benefits

Why use Gusto? The key advantage of this system is automated payroll management, as users can set up and schedule payments, and let the system handle the rest. With this feature in place, all employees will be paid on time, and the process will become independent from human interaction and thus less prone to mistakes. Gusto Payroll also supports the campaign for paperless transactions as digital paystubs are delivered via email in an effort to reduce paper waste.

Employees who are feeling generous can even set up their accounts to donate to charitable institutions straight from their paychecks. Integration with the widely used accounting systems makes Gusto a flexible platform, especially when it comes to bookkeeping which falls completely under the system’s competence.

Let’s give a detailed look to some of the main benefits associated to this system:

It saves your time

The main benefit of full payroll automation is saving time, as Gusto takes over time off calculations, ACA compliance, year-end forms, payroll taxes, and even adopts unique workflow calculations. In this way, all important data is synchronized in a single system, and the user can focus on more important activities.

It makes payroll management error-proof

Gusto will not only minimize critical human errors, but eliminate those completely. Now that you won’t have to enter data in several different apps and websites, you will take things easy, and let the system calculate deductions without you being involved at all. Plus, Gusto acts as a personalized employee database, where you can store important information, and access it any time and from any device.

It facilitates access to information

The reason why both small and large teams prefer Gusto is the simplified, hassle-free navigation. The app makes it easy to pull off important information, including employee contact data, I-9s, W-2s, time off balances, and much more. For the purpose, you will only have to log into the system using your credentials.

It activates full payroll automation

Gusto requires nothing else but a single entry of your team’s data, where you get enough flexibility to decide how your employees are paid, and how their paystubs, tax filings, and W-2s ought to be handled. Your employees will also be able to add date themselves, and download information that is important to them even after they leave the company. The system will also automate all local, state, and federal taxes in validated forms that can be used for all purposes. The Gusto team acknowledges the difficulty of managing payroll for first-time users, and thus provides a kit of useful tips and training materials, and access to expert support.

It simplifies benefits administration

Consult the vendor’s licensed advisers and make use of the intuitive software to manage benefits easily. Keep your existing plan or choose a new one, tailored for your needs. Gusto will make this possible with employment tax reporting, payments, workers’ comp insurance, new hire reports and detailed budget plans. Your team will also have access to dedicated benefits advisors with years of health care experience.

It streamlines HR

With Gusto, you can consolidate all your employee data. All info from emergency contacts to new hire documents to anniversaries is organized in one place, where employees can access it, modify it, or download it for their needs. This also helps comply with HIPAA standards, and makes HR management much more transparent.

It is fully compliant with HIPPA, ACA, and ERISA standards

All Gusto operations were designed to meet in detail HIPAA, ACA, and ERISA standard which means that the system will check data automatically, prepare compliance reviews of your benefits and send automated notices, and guarantee employee privacy unlike any similar system.

It offers affordable, integrated 401(k)

Gusto allows you to set up and manage 401(k) plans with unparalleled ease, and enable employees in such way to save money for their retirement.

It integrates with all important third-party systems

Last, but not least, Gusto was developed to blend easily within every software architecture, and works in synergy with several accounting, time and attendance, and expense systems. On the list of integrations, you will discover names such as Xero, QuickBooks, FreshBooks, TSheets, When I Work, Nimble, Homebase, Receipt Bank, Bamboo HR, and many more.

Gusto Position In Our Categories

Because companies have their own business-related wants, it is only logical they steer clear of getting an all-encompassing, ideal solution. Having said that, it is almost impossible to find such application even among widely used software solutions. The sensible step to do is to shortlist the different important factors which necessitate analysis such as important features, price terms, technical skill levels of staff members, business size, etc. After which, you must perform your research comprehensively. Go over some of these Gusto review articles and check out the other software products in your shortlist more closely. Such all-encompassing research makes sure you weed out unfit software solutions and select the one which offers all the features your company requires for optimal results.

Position of Gusto in our main categories:

TOP 10

Gusto is one of the top 10 Accounting Software products

Gusto is also listed in the following subcategories:

Since each organization has unique business requirements, it is prudent for them to desist from searching for a one-size-fits-all ideal software solution. Needless to say, it would be useless to try to find such a platform even among widely used software platforms. The clever thing to do would be to jot down the various vital aspects that need consideration such as main features, budget, skill levels of workers, company size etc. Then, you should do your homework thoroughly. Read some Gusto Payroll Software reviews and look into each of the other solutions in your shortlist in detail. Such comprehensive homework can make sure you discard ill-fitting applications and select the app that offers all the elements you require for business success.

PROS: I love the intuitive and clear interface. Plus, their customer support is outstanding and the agents are very knowledgeable and helpful. They always resolve my issue quickly. With their help, we are able to manage all our payroll tasks effortlessly.

CONS: I am not sure I can blame this issue on Gusto. I use Xero for accounting and it is a drawback that I cannot match the payroll deductions in Gusto with the pertinent fields in Xero. However, my accountant was able to resolve the issue and continue to work smoothly, so it is not a big issue.

PROS: Product is easy to use with a modern interface and clear pricing.

CONS: They clearly do not have any consideration for security. I was closing my account as my business is quite small and I no longer needed to run payroll. When they sent me an email to go over next steps, they sent an email to myself and the owner of ANOTHER business who was also looking to close her account. The email started with Dear Zack and (other owner's name), and any replies from either one of us got CC'd to the other. After myself and this other owner called them out on it, they stopped responding to our emails. If they can't even keep emails separate and secure, how can I trust them with bank accounts, social security numbers, and tax information? Needless to say I am NOT happy, and I would never give this company another penny of my business.

PROS: It is simple to set up the application and the interface is attractive. The vendor could make customer support more accessible. But their phone agents are very professional. The good thing is Gusto focuses on constantly improving its features and it makes our payroll processes easy to manage. Finally, its integration with Zenefits is very useful.

CONS: Gusto is ideal for direct deposit payment. It is not suitable if you have to pay checks to a lot of employees as it lacks a print/delivery option. Another glitch is the product could offer more customization for PTO policy.

PROS: I’m not going to lie, handling payroll is a very daunting task. This is especially true for a small-time business owner like me. However, with Gusto by my side, I can rest easy in the knowledge that all the necessary transactions are being handled efficiently. Providing health and other benefits to my employees are so much easier with this tool too. I can easily back-up their benefits to their 401k without much trouble.

CONS: There are just some nuances that I’d prefer not to encounter when I use Gusto. One such nuance is the regular pop-ups on the main page. I’d prefer to be able to use a different account to settle bills for the company too, not just depend on the account used for payroll. I’d like to suggest that Gusto improve their employee tracking tool too.

CONS: My experience thus far has been very smooth and I have no had no difficulties at all. I am waiting for the tax season to find out how the software can help me with my tax filing and other tasks.

PROS: I’ve always dreaded payroll management tasks—from sending out compensation to figuring out which insurance policy to use for my team. But now, with Gusto working for me, everything is a lot easier. I love that the software’s design is simple and clean too.

CONS: It takes a while for their customer service reps to respond to my questions/concerns. They really should work this out because a lot of clients need answers ASAP.

PROS: I work as a product tester for a company and Gusto has enabled me to track my payslips. With it, I can get a full view of my payment history without having to comb through records because of its clean and highly navigable user interface. They have well laid out options too and I find this advantageous because I like to download a record of my wages just in case I need them on my device. And when it comes to security, Gusto does not scrimp. It uses a two-factor authentication method that protects my account from unauthorized logins.

CONS: I absolutely have no complaints about Gusto seeing that they have a wonderful interface. It is obvious from the way it is designed that the developers and designers put a lot of thought into it.

PROS: It used to be good when we first started using it years ago.

CONS: Gusto has tripled our price with zero new features. When I emailed support, they ignored my email even though we have been a paying customer for years. The same features that I was paying $4/mo/person for is now $12/mo/person. Since all employee data is tied into this system, it is a nightmare to switch, and they know it which is why they don't grandfather you in like most ethical companies do. Recently they failed to pay unemployment taxes in Texas on time leading to penalties for all of their Texas based businesses. Support can take days to respond if they respond at all. They are not an ethical business to work with and I look forward to the day we can shed them and go with a company that doesn't bait and switch you on pricing and has support that actually is friendly, helpful, and responsive.

PROS: Nothing! Really I mean there is nothing that is valuable about this company or service. Slow payment processing, When they do pay your employees they get it wrong or pay them on the wrong day. Try calling "customer support" and they will always say it is the customers fault. Never their fault and will continue to make a point of why they are right and the customer is wrong!

CONS: Slow payment processing. Horrible, disrespectful and rude customer support. They will not listen the to issue and will only tell you what they feel the customer is doing wrong!

This app has helped to simplify our payroll operations and we are also able to save a lot of time. Last, but not the least, the pricing plans are very affordable.

CONS: The vendor could have done the implementation in a better way. They could have provided a detailed timeline of what they were going to do. Plus, they could have clarified what input I needed to give. In the end it was fine but I had to do some of the work myself.

CONS: I have no complaints at all as Gusto works fine and is the right fit for my needs.

Ease of Use

PROS: It's easy to enter payroll, and you get instant feedback once it's complete. As a small business owner, it's nice to know exactly what the cash needs will be for meeting payroll. The monthly cost is fair and well worth what you get in return. Customer service is awesome as well: friendly, knowledgeable, and responsive.

CONS: I haven't had any problems in nearly 2 years of using Gusto.

PROS: Gusto is very user friendly- and "dummy proof"- they send out reminders to run payroll- provide easy to ready cash requirement summaries- great application

CONS: I wish there was a better module for child support deductions and other misc. payroll deductions and pay the vendor direct.
