ArX is an intuitive distributed version control system that delivers the performance, power, and flexibility that developers need as they manage collections of files known as “archives.” The version control system is compatible with different types of files, but it is primarily beneficial for developers who are working on text files. With Arx, users will be able to easily track file history together with the associated change comments, version tags, forks, branches, and more.
ArX offers features and capabilities aimed at helping users successfully meet the goals and objectives of every project they are working on using the system. Among them is the ability to perform powerful branching and merging, apply efficient tagging, preserve file history across file and directory renames, execute atomic operations, and publish archives on any HTTP web server.
Show MoreDistributed Version Control Model
Unlike other traditional version control tools that use a centralized model like CVS or Concurrent Version System, ArX offers a different model or approach to version control which is distributed or decentralized. In a centralized version control model, all developers working on a specific project are using only a single repository that is maintained by a central server. The problem with this model is that when the central server is down, all work stops.
On the other hand, a distributed version control model allows developers to maintain different repositories wherein each developer can remotely work on an archive stored in his own repository without the need to connect to a central server. In addition, although this model doesn’t require a central server, developers can still share their work with each other easily, supporting repository merges and file history reconciliations.
Optimistic Locking
ArX has a version control concurrency feature that uses optimistic locking which permits multiple developers to work on the same file and apply changes to it all at the same time. As opposed to pessimistic locking wherein a file is locked when a developer checks it out and remains locked until that developer checks it in or commit the changes he or she made with the file, optimistic locking doesn’t actually lock the file. Instead, in this version control concurrency model, the state of the file during the previous commit is captured and saved. This means other developers will still be able to access and modify the file. When there are conflicts between the previous and current commits, they are reconciled while the file is being checked in.
Publish Archives On Any HTTP Web Server
The distributed version control system allows developers to publish their archives on any HTTP web server such as Apache or Boa without the need to run any special code on the server. This is a cost-effective feature because they will be able to host their code on a less expensive website. In addition, it makes the server very secure, as they no longer need to use services other than a standard web server.
